W. M. Averell is in Estacada so
liciting subscriptions to “ Western

for the West. There is a little e x
ploitation proposition connected
with this. For a certain number of
subscriptions the proprietors of tile
magazine will contribute a few pag

descriptive write-up of the town.
The magazine is read by several
thousand readers, an 1 the lienefit
to lie derived from a write-up in it is
plain to anyone. Mr. Av.-rell should
get the full number of subscriptions
It is announced that Mr. F. M.
Gill is a candidate for state repre
sentative from Clackamas county,
nud that he will make his personal
statement to that effect within a
couple weeks. He will be a candi
date as a republican, though his
tendencies to independency in mat
ters political are quite well known.
Should Mr. Gill cuter the race for
representative we predict his nom
ination and election by good major
ities. He is well known through
out most of the county, and is a
man highly qualified for the office.
W hy not give Eastern Clackamas
this one representative?
A Public Library
Estacada may have a public li

bus been offered for that purpose by
E. F. Surface. A short time ago
the Epworth League made an effort
to start a public reading room, but
too many obstacles seemed to be in
the wav, and the woik was aban
doned. If the League committee
will confer with Mr. Surface satis
factory arrangements may lx* ar
rived ut. No charge will be made
for rent, and it is probable the rail
way company will furnish lights
free. A partition will have to lx
removed, and the room furnished
with chairs, desks, tables, shelves
and a stove.
L a t e r The room referred to a-
bove has been rented for a barber
shop, but an addition will be built
to the drug store in which there will
be a room for the reading room.
