Chicago, M ay 28.— Railroad m an
agers here estim ate th at by the end
of the first week in June the railroads
of the country will have discharged
between 50,000 and 100,000 m en now
employed. Som e estim ates put the
num ber much higher. This does
not take into account the large
num ber of laborers and others dis
missed because of abandoned exten
sions and other im provem ents. O r
ders w ere recently issued for the
strictest econom y and the reduction
of forces to the lowest possible point.
The New Y ork Central is to reduce
m any of its pay-rolls fully one-third.
If the order is carried out literally in
all departm ents, it would m ean the
discharge of 50,000 em ployes on this
system alone.
Railway m anagers say they rather
welcome the opportunity to weed out
hundreds of incom petent, forced
upon them during the rush season, and
to whom, it is claimed, m any wrecks
and destruction of life and property
can be traced. Aside from this, the
roads expect to save a few m illions in
wages during the sum m er, when traf
fic is light. T he heaviest cuts will
be in the operating departm ents, in
the shops and am ong clerks.
M any of the employes will be taken
back again when business becomes
heavy again, but a strong effort will
be m ade to shut out perm anently the
incom petents and undesirables. The
discharged tracklayers and others who
were w orking on extensions and like
im provem ents will n ot be re-em ployed
until the financial m arket is m ore
prom ising and until the new legisla
tion has been given a thorough trial
by the roads.
The application of the 2-cent pas
senger rate will be especially felt by
W estern roads, and reductions in
freight rates and the dem ands of labor
unions, which am ount to millions, will
affect all roads and call for rigid econ
omy and a general slow ing up until
the way seems clear.
M any states, also, have practically
doubled the taxes im posed upon rail
roads, and the general result requires
retrenchm ent in every direction pos
sible.
