It was stated at the council meet
ing that it would be worth close to
f. 6 oo to fix the Main street grade.
That sounds big. But the one who
made the estimate should under
stand that he is not required to cov
er the grade with silver dollars. It
isn’ t necessary. Two hundred dol
lars or less should put the grade in
fairly good condition, so as to satis
fy the country travel. It may pos
sibly be that the surveyors have
made too much of a cut in the hill,
and have overcalculated the city’ s
intentions in making the improve
ment.
Once upon a time when Ben T ill
man was addressing the United
States senate in his characteristic
way, Senator Foraker interrupted
and insisted on knowing what the
South Carolina senator was talking
about. “ Nothing" says Tillman,
“ I'm just making a few remarks on
the general cussedness of the situa
tion.” And that was what the city
council did Tuesday night.
It has
been generally known for some time
that things are going on about the
town which should not be allowed.
But nothing has been done to put a
stop to the doings.
