The city council convened in reg ular session Tuesday evening, but as some special ordinances had not yet been prepared for its action an adjournment was taken till tonight. Russell Sage, the millionaire but of many a good natured and malic ious joke, has died at the age of 90. Sage lived a busy life, and his tem poral reward was great, his wealth being estimated at $100,000,000. He was of poor parents, but nature had endowed him with a great bus iness faculty which he put to good use. Japan is going to have religion. A committee to travel abroad for the purpose of discovering the true religion, the one which should be embraced by the Japanese people, was appointed by the Mikado of Ja pan seven years ago. This com mission failed to carry out its pur pose, but now the work has been resumed and European governments have been notified to that effect. As it is in the Interior: Spray has had her share of the hot wave that has swept over the Pacific coast the past week. The thermometer has ranged from 105 to 110 in the shade, and eveu the nights are too warm for refreshing sleep. The hot weather has been intesified by a scarcity of ice. Those who have ice houses put up only enough ice for their own use, and there is none for sale.— Spray Courier. Morning Oregonian— If any W il lamette Valley farmer will take a glance around his ranch he will see scores of nooks and corners near the fences and buildings where grass has grown tall and become ripe and unfit for feed l>ecause he kept no sheep to eat it down. The dry grass is not merely waste, it is alsoa men ace to his property, for, in case of fire, it affords a means of conveying the destroying element from one part of the farm to another. In Western Oregon, where sheep may be kept on Fall wheat and on clover fields in the Spring, with benefit to these crops, every farmer should have a small flock of these always profitable animals. Rosie Norris, living near Barton, wss committed to the asylum at Sa lem, this week. A few years ago Miss Norris sustained severe injur ies in a run-a-way accident, and her present derangement is a concussion of the brain resulting from the ac cident. She is a native of Cal. Seems to us the railroad company should provide a caboose for the regular freight train on this line. Without a caboose it looks as though they were doing switch work all the time, but if a caboose was attached strangers would know that it was a real freight train and that it was going somewhere. The old, historic Milwaukie Ho tel came near being burned Friday of last week. This building was put up in 1852 and was then the largest building in the state outside of Salem. In the days of a half century ago Milwaukie was a rival city of Portland. A t that time the old hotel was the center of the fes tivities and social functions of the pioneers of Northern Oregon. W. K. Myers of the Dodge Lum ber Company, was transacting bus iness in Kstacada, Wednesday. A fine ten pound boy was liorn to Mr. and Mrs. Myers on July 14. Mrs. Myers is doing well. W. E. re ports the sawmill business good lots of demand for luml>er. He is furn ishing the plank for the Estacada- Springwater road, and he is kept very busy. Contractor Stafford expects t o finish the Heylman cottage this week. This is the best residence in the city, and it has gone up at a lightning pace The building is of the modern bungalow style, with fireplace, bath, and electric lights. It has a stone cemented cellar. A spacious porch extends across the front end from which a fine view of the down town district can be had. Last Saturday Robert Duncan, aged 21 years, was taken to Salem for medical treatment. He has been subject to epileptic fits, and of late was quite bad with them. It was finally c’ecided that he should re ceive medical aid, and so Dr. Smith made arrangements for the patient. Mr. Duncan's people live in the Garfield country. A brother, Char ley, and Dr. Smith took him to Or egon City.
