The forest reserve of the United States has been increased in the last two years from 50,000,000 to 100, 000,000 acres. This area is as large as all of New England and the mid dle states with Maryland and Vir ginia thrown in. Oregon has con tributed a large part of the forest reserve. President H i l l of the Great Nor thern has been on the Coast révérai weeks telling the cities what they should do about railroad building. Mr. Hill has done a great deal for the “ Northwest” and he has been well paid for his work. The first thing looked for now by the great railway companies is terminal facil ities, and the interior has to wait. The city council has caused to be j posted the following street improve ment notice:— Notice is given of intended street ! improvement on Broadway from the 1 railroad North to the north side of Third street. It is proposed that the city pay ! one third and the owners of proper-1 ty abutting on the improvment to j pay two thirds of the cost. The | proposed improvement is to consist j of six inches of No. 3 crushed roc k to lie top dressed with No. 2, 3, and cement, and a final top dressing 1 of No. la n d cement the whole to be thoroughly rolled and packed.
