In this issue The News presents to it’s readers the announcement of John H. Gibson,
of Harmony voting precinct, of his candidacy fer the Republican nomination for representa­
tive from Clackamas county.
Mr. Gibson is an old resident of this county, having lived in the Milwaukie precinct for
about 12 years. He is thoroughly familiar with the county’s needs and promises, if nomin­
ated and elected, to give the district an honest, economical and capable representation. He
believes that a public office should be faithfully and honestly administered.
His views as to the duties of a representative of the people, are:—
First, To labor earnestly and honestly for the enactment of such laws as the people
are in need of and demand, and the repeal of those present laws that the people do not want.
He is in favor of one good normal school rather than two poor ones; the enactment of
a banking law, with a state bank examiner; the election of road overseers by the people; the
passing of a law compelling corporations and public franchises to pay their just portion of
the public taxes; and a separate appropriation for each item of expenditure.
Among the other good things Mr. Gibson believes in arc, the abolishment of the office
of State Printer, and the letting of the state’s printing to the lowest responsible bidder. He
also advocates repealing the law on burning slashings, and if elected he agrees to support the
people’s choice for U. S. Senator. Is a strong supporter of the primary law, and thinks it a
means to purify the politics of the state. He is an exslreet car employee and as such will
appeal to the railroad hands for their votes.
A vote for Mr. Gibson is a vote for a man who is entirely separate from the present po­
litical regime in Clackamas county, and in conclusion he asks that if his views coincide with
those of his readers, he hopes they may favor him with their support at the coming election,
and promises to devote his time and best efforts in thrir behalf, and to do all in his power to
merit the honor given him.
