The city has in view the creation
of a public cemetery. A committee
of aldermen has lieen appointed to
purchase a site near town.
Tues
day night's meeting was adjourned
to Wednesday night when resolu
tions were adopted favoring the
purchase of the water system fiom
the railroad company. It has been
figured that the system can be made
to pay interest on the bonds and
running expenses from the start
It will take $6,750 to buy the sys
tem without the pumping plant
which will not be needed. The bal
ance of the $10,000 bond loan will
be used to convert it into a natural
gravity system.
A spring sending
forth sufficient of the purest of wa
ter has been secured on T. Yocum’s
farm one and a half miles east of
town. This water will be piped in
to town, and it will give us one of
the liest city w'ater works in exist
ence
The council will ask for an
other loan to be used in street and
drainage improvements
We are at work on an edition cf
The News which will be more or
less illustrated with Fstacada'Scen
ery.
It will also contain special
advertising and descriptive reading
matter of the county, city and the
business firms of the place. It is
the intention to mjike it as represen
tative as is possible with the coop
erative support extended us. The
efforts to make the number one
which will becieditable to ourself
and its patrons will only be limited
by what the material at hand. If
was our intention to get this out
several weeks ago, but unavoidable
delays have occured.
Three capitalists from Grants Pass
were here last week looking over
the wood working factory, and the
advisability of putting in a sash and
door factory in connection with the
present plant. The gentlemen are
ufanufacturing fir sash and doors at
Grants Pass and thought such a
factory would do well here.
The Estacada Brick & Tile Co.
is having a ditch dug along the foot
of the hill at the factory to drain
the water off. Why wouldn’t such
a ditch extended from Second St.
around the foot of the hill keep a
great deal of the water out of town?
Now that it is all over, who was
it that suggested it, started it, gave
it the first necessary support and en
couragement that resulted in such a
marked success? Ac Allen, Corbett,
Scott, Good, Meyers, Richardson
and the numerous et al.
Mr. and Mrs. A E Barr went to
the city Saturday evening and re
mained till Monday evening trans
acting business and enjoying them
selves.
Mrs H. Cooper spent a few days
in Portland this week visiting her
sons A. B and R. J. Cooper. Her
sister, Mrs. A. J. Winder and dau
ghter Iva accompanied her and will
spend some time in the city.
Last Saturday was Estacada Day
at the exposition, it would seem for
the railroad company sold over 200
tickets for Portland at its Estacada
office on that day
As a rule the
people all along the line turned out
just as numerous.
It pays to ad
vertise.
A large quantity of earth and
rock came down the canyon side
Tuesday forenoon and piled up a-
gainst one of the big steam shovels
at work on the canal at Cazadero.
No damage done, but it will have
t o be cleared away before excava
tion work can be resumed
The damage by fire to the H< t 1
Estacada has been repaired
Parts
of new floor joist and some floor had
to be replaced. The fire place was
given a stone and cement founda
tion from the ground up, which will
insure it against another such acci
dent. Smoke from underneath the
floor came up and filled the parlors
and other rooms but not enough to
do any great damage.
It is said
that the insurance was allowed.

Some work has been done this
week to relieve the business part of
town of the surplus water that runs
and settles in the streets Side ditch
es have been dug to drain the water
off. We believe that a great deal of
the water tbat is allowed to run
through town and soak into the
prir.ciply traveled streets could be
diverted and run elsewhere.
The
money spent on the streets is well
expended.

Jones-Shankland
A v e T y pretty wedding took place
last Sunday, October 15th, at the
home of Mrs. Nancy C. Shankland
just north of town when her daugh
ter, Miss Effie M. Shankland and
Mr. Frank Jones of Sellwood were
united in marriage.
Rev. J. W.
Cragg of Portland pronounced the
ceremony which united the young
people for life.
Only the nearest
relatives were present. The bride
was gowned in a pretty cream color
ed dress trimmed in lace with all-
over lace. The home was decorat
ed very nicely with Oregon grape
and evergreens, roses and carna
tions, with ferns in vases about the
rooms.
A number of useful and
pretty gifts were presented to the
pair
After the ceremony dinner
was served, a beautiful vase of car
nations forming the center piece on
the table
Mr. and Mrs. Jones left
on the 4 o’clock car for Portland,
and from there they went on a pleas-
