SiaSOlIPNON R A U S One Year Six Months $1 00 .30 II paid in advance SE PT . 14, 1905 The coming of the rainy season once more brings to mind the ques tion of city improvement. It has been decided that vve shall have a new school, a sewerage system and sufficient sidewalks, and‘the ques tion now is, shall we buy the water system? The sewer will cost $5000 and the railroad company asks $7500 for the water system, and it will take $2500 more for extensions and changes, for it is believed we can and should have a natural gravity water system which would be the best and most economical. This makes $15.000 bonded indebtedness for the city, and $4000 for the school district. The sewer will benefit the streets, but there can be no perma nent grading done this year. The city needs all of these, ,and if the water system can be made to pay it might lie a fine thing for the town to own it The question is before t!ie council, and the people are sup posed to express themselves before next Tuesday Another addition to the Estaca da Wood Manufacturing Co's fac tory 25x50 is being built on the South side of the main building. W. W. Boner is doing the work. The company is having the street North of the factory cleared and the sidetrack will be moved thirty feet farther North to give room for an other addition on that side. These are only small parts of the improve ments that are expected tobe added within the next few months. The vacant block South of the factory is being made into a lumber yard. lighted with this state and the cli mate generally. He intends to make his home here if he can find a suit able occupation. Mrs. Robert DeShaser, of Dover, a well known resident of this coun ty, was taken seriously ill with stran gulated hernia Tuesday. A physi cian was at once called who remov ed her to the Good Samaratin hos pital where she underwent a suc cessful operation by Doctors A. E. Rockey and C. B. Smith and is now apparently on the road to recovery. Mrs. C. A. Porter who died last week Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the old home near Garfield, was born in Ohio, and was 68 years 6 mos. and 23 days old. She was Miss Gard ner, and while living in Iowa met and married Mr. C. S. Porter. They came to Oregon in 1883 The fun eral sermon was preached by Elder G. P. Rich of Boring, and the re mains were laid to rest in Mt. Zion cemetery. The funeral was largely attened. Four children survive Mrs Porter; they are, Mrs. Allen Patter son, Mrs Tillie Sarver, Mrs. May Page and Mr. W. W Porter, all of whom are living near here. The News office was favored Sun day by a visit from Mrs. M. L. Woodcock of the National and State Republican Campaign force. Mrs. Woodcock is a resident of Portland and came out here to see the beau tiful city on the Clackamas' She is a Roosevelt enthuiasist, and favors the reelection of Gov Chamberlain. Mrs. Woodstock and her “ Roose velt flag" constitute quite a potent force in state politics in spite of Chairman Frank Baker and the police. While on the Trail at the Fair last week, a democrat or an Irrogote tried to set fire to the flag she was carrying but the fellow was seen just as he was about to touch the match to the flag, and Mrs. Wood cock treed him in the entrance to the Carnival of Venice and tried to get a guard to have him arrested but there seemed to be no guards on the grounds so he got away.
