The report shows the followoing statis tical facts: Number of children of school age in the county— boys, 4,224; girls, 3,960; total, 8,184. Number of teachers— male, 34; female, 165; total, 199. Number of children not attending school— male, 911; female, 895; to tal. 244. Number of children attending school outside of district— male, 117 female, 127; total, 244. Average daily attendance, 4,167.9 There are 120 districts in the county and 122 schoolhouses. Two schoolhouses were built last year. The county has 4, 275 legal voters at school elections. The schools were run on an aver age 7.4 months. The superintend ent paie 95 school visits and trabel- ed 2,000, miles; held one county institnte and three local institutes. The school libraries contain 5,369 volumns and 739 books were pur chased last year. Private schools in the county employ six teachers and have 173 pupils. The report shows the disbursments in teachers’ wages were $58,474.99, and the av erage salary paid the women teach ers was $40.60; that paid the men was $49.72; schoolhouses in the county are valued at$i47,995- The cash on hand from last year was $15, 402.18. The total cash on hand at this report is shown to be $13, 7 2 8 . 8 3 . _________ E. C. Belknap, vice-president and general manager of the Estaca da Brick & Tile company, started for Chicago today for the purpose of purchasing a complete plant for the manufacture of all sorts of press ed and ornamental brick. Within a few months Portland will have upon its market a style and quality of brick such as it has heretofore been necessary to import from the east. J. W. Reed, will within ten or fifteen days, begin work on the buildings necessary for the installa tion of the machinery, and it is ex pected that these will be ready for occupancy by the time the plant ar rives. A. J. Paul, manager of the Portland Machinery company, yes- terday resigned his position to ac- cept the managmentof the Estacada Wood Manufacturing company. He will immediately more than double the capacity of the factory, adding largely to its payroll and the pros- perity of the town.— Oregon Journal July 15- Mr. Reed does not expect to be gin work on the plant until about the middle of next month. The new manager, Mr. Paul, arrived, Tuesday and has taken charge of the business. Hereafter all of the company’s business will be transact ed at its home at 134 First Street, Portland. If it clears off in the night, look for rain next day. If smoke from the chimney settles instead of rising there is a storm at hand. When sound trovels a long distance there is also a storm near. Never expect much storm in the old of the moon. The absence of dew and unusually heavy dew are alike forerunners of rain. If these signs fail to work see a carpenter and get your roof fixed. Warner arrested charging him with hitting her with a dangerous wea pon a club. The case was tried be fore Justice Livy Stipp and and it was dismissed. This case has at tracted considerable attention by the public becauseof the prominence of the parties to the action. The case grew out of trouble over some cattle of the plaintiff’swhich the de fendant claims trespassed on his premises.
