A NEW , TYPE OF ACCIDENT LEGISLATION The demand for uuconditiona compulsory automobile insurance which led to the fan.oui or perha; infamousMassachusetts law, teei:'. to have diminished. In its place ha: appeared a new viewpoint which ha. produced . uch laws as thost in ef fee in OJifiinia, New York and a fc other states. In general these laws provide tha a motorist, in case of an acciden caused by his own careles ness, tnus .uy all judfft im iiti e.gai'nst him urn provide a bond or an insurance policy against future accidents bef.in tain being tllowed to drive. The constant inert a?e in driving accidents has apparently made some sort of lejrislf.tisn neces ary ami these law3, while comparatively new and untried, would seem fair and reasonable. There is no room on our highways for the reckles, the Im competent or the ignorant. Nor should others pay for their mistakes. Unconditional compulsory insurance such as exemplified by the Ma saehu stts ordinance, overlooked this simple fact and came immediately to grief. Every citizen who drives a ear will await with interest the results of this newer type of accident legislation. The Manufacturer. Went to Stevenion Andy Wittman went to Stevenson, Washington, Tuesday morning to lock after the completion of four large culverts, which his firm is building on the North Bank highway above the Slamania county town. Andy says the job is about completed, about all that remains to be done i the removal of the forms holding the concrete work. The time-honored prac tice rf soaking the material in salt, alum, pepper, vinegar and various other solutions as a nwans of "set ting" the color Is largely a waste of i time and materials. While the co lor will not run a- lone as the. ma. terial remains in the solution, it has no permanent effect of the dye, and the material is just as likely to fade when washed m the usual way. It i; inadvisable to attempt to clean a large rug at home, unlesi I experienced and equipped with the , proper facilities for stretching and 'drying, as the result is likely to be !a streaked, faded and sorry looking rug. It is usually most economical m the end to ;end large rugs to a ; commercial cleaning- firm. J In choosing wall covering, it is well ti keep in mind that a large I prrtern makes a room look smaller, j while a pkin covering or one with I a small design apparently increases i the dimensions of the room. A solid : shows the dirt more readily than a figured or mottled one. For the home dressmaker a foun dation pattern a plain, simply cut pattern which has been fitted to the 'ndividtial saves a great deal of tme and money, as it eliminates the trying on, fitting.and altering neces sary with an untried pattern. It Is er; y to work out variation in neck line, sleeves, collar, pleats, trimming etc. Salem New $150,000 grandstand rnd exhibit building for Oregon State Fair will be dedicated September 23. L. S.
