Art Fargher goes to take the
army examination next week.
Word reached here Thursday of
the death of J. W. Batty, at Van
couver, Washington, on the 7th in
instant. Mr. Batty was a civil war
veteran, 73 years of age and an old
desident of this place, where several
relatives still reside.
W. H. Dunham has acquired the
jewlelry store lately operated by H.
L. Emmons and has taken possession
of same. Mr. Emmons has gone to
Bend, where he is employed as
watch maker. His wife expects to j
follow him in a few days. I
James C. Pratt, postmaster at Wa
mic, and Miss Julia Savage were I
married at The. Dalles on Monday,
October 23, Rev. C. P. Bailey per-j
f rming the ceremony. Both are '
well knovn in this section. Mr. Pratt
left for The Dalles stortly after the
marriage to report for
duty.

Floyd Kelly left on Monday and
; has enlistaed in the navy. He is

Bailey, on a flight alone from Lon
don to Capetown, crashed in land
ing in Tabora, Africa, but was un
injured although her plane was bad
ly damaged.

days ago that Chester Pachette, who
is in the army, and who has been at
Camp Green, North Carilina, has
left with his company for Europe.

mometer thruit into the thickest
part of the meat. When the ther
mometer registers between 130 de
grees and 150 degrees F., the meat
will be rare, medium between 150
degrees and 170 degrees,, and well
done at about 180 degrees F.
