The H. S. orchestra is composed of stud ents who know music and who are prepared to play in a manner to cause all listeners to tap in time. Each member of the Eeds represented an animal, among which were elephants, tigrers, leopards and monkeys. They all acted like monkeys. Several con tests were put on by the animals, tuch as chariot races, jumping for doughnuts, walking a line blind folded, and eating prunes which were tied to the end of a string. The Freshman were initiated at this time. Mary Greene enjoyed being a nurse about as well as Haryy Rutherford enjoyed being a baby. Tom Slushcr had the honor to wheel the baby carriage. Alta Chas tain and Dorothy Davis can truth fully say they have had a mustache. Charles Bothwell was in the height of hii glory when he was told he could represent the strong man. "Bo" Wil son ought to wear dresses all of the time, as he made the "cute:t girl" in High school. The Freshmen were all blindfolded and then were treat ed to a feast of worms and cats' eyes. After the games refreshments of ice cream, caV, sandwiches and lemonade were s?rved. The 3rd. and 4th grades with Mrs. Joynt are enjoying an interest table. When a pupil has his les sons he may go to this table and get a book or magazine to read. They are also enjoying a beautiful Sultana and Christmas Cactus, given to them by Mrs. Foley. The pupils will like to watch -the growth of these interetting plants. Mrs. Cantrell's room received the library books from the Wasco coun ty library. Every one who ia a reader ' will get full value out of this list of books. Last Friday Mrs. Joynt gave in ctruction to "the pupils of the 3rd 4th, 5th and 6th grades in the art of soap carving. They changed bars of aoap to lemons, bottles and bears. A long table has been moved from the basement to the east room and will te used by the bookkeeping students. This class is doing pre limary work, but are anxious to be gin on the sets. During the past week the football team has been busy at signal prac tice. The first game will be with Madras next Saturday, Oct. 6, on the local field. We are confident that the honors will be more equal than la.-t season. The games we have secured at present are Oct. 6, Madras at Maupin; Oct. 12, Dufur on Dufur field; Oct 19, Wapinitia on our field, and a return game at Wapinitia Nov. 2nd." The Maupin boys are eager to go and will give a good account ef themselves. ! Much interest has been aroused among the students of the chemistry class. The cupboards and black boards have been rearranged and a sink Installed. This will make it possible to keep the equipment clean and orderly. ,' The grade pupils have profited by the "Soldier Campaign." Now every one marches in "step like a veteran. The Lawn ' (Editorial by Doris Kelly) Everyone tnjoys a well-kept lawn. For years our school has gone without one. With much hard work and patience trees were made to grow on the south end of the school grounds. Then a lawn was started. Roses border two side of it. Our lawn has been well cared for and it is one of the most beauti ful school lawns in this county. We, therefore, aid in the protection of the lawn through interest and care. Wapinitia Plains SCHOOL NOTES Mrs. Ralph Woodside substituted in the Primary department for Mrs. WooLey, three days the first of- the week. Mrs. Woolsey was called to Portland by the death of her father. Sam Wall transports the Hachlcr children to and from the Central school daily. Sam recently acquir ed a new auto. Marion Howard registered as a Junior Monday morning. Last Friday afternoon the boys donned their new football suits and troted to the gridiron thru a cheer ing lane of lusty-lunged youngsters, the occasion being our first practice in uniform. A quarter day holiday was granted the High school girls and grade youths, who utilized the hour in composing yells and songs, and practicing them while the squad had their workout on the field. 4 Our Fresman initiation program for three boys and three girls will occur this week Friday night, in the school house. Written announce ment to this effect will be carried by the pupils and the mail tervice. Everyone is welcome. Tygh Valley will play Wapinitia at Wapinitia on Friday, October 12. This will be the first football any of our boys have ever played, and many people will have an opportun ity to watch a game for the first time. Wapinitia has a "cyclone" team, so come and see them play.
