Scherrer Candidate for the Republican Nomination for COUNTY CLERK Wasco County Primaries May 18. . The Dalles, Oregon The County Gets the Fees Paid advertisement The Taxpayers league recently sent out questionaires to all candi dates asking them to promise that, In ui c of election, they would not keep nny of the fees of the office, but would turn them into the county I treasury. ', j The framers of the document evi dently failed to tako into Considera tion those offices h which' no fees are collected, tuch ns treusdrer, and assessor. The latter officer's posi tion does not require that fees he paid in nny intance. There is no matter to come to thnt department which demands a payment of fees, therefore to compel .1 candidate lor that office to sign a statement that he would not hypothecate fees) seems rather far-fetched. In some instances a statement that he would not take fees to himself might be all right. An official, when j he takes the oath of office, says he iwill support the law and conduct the affairs of his offict in accordance with same. Then why subject himvto the promise that he would be hone, t? All officials are presumed to be hon est when elected. Should he prove derelict to his oath wo have lepal remedies for his transgression even if it be withheld until the head of the legal department of the county wac reaady to involw such. remedies. 'To demand such a statement from all candidates seems to us to be in the line of compelling them to loosen hold of their self re.pect and be sub jected to undue humiliation. To use a failure to sign a promise-to-be-honest statement or suffer an tagonism in his campaign for votes is to us a sort of threat, and as such is not to be countenanced by right thinking and right meaning people. We believe a candidate 6hould stand upon his own merits. If the voters regard one man as being better fitted for the office than another, all the threats imaginable should not ftand , in his way of election. Voters gen erally are fair and all the propaganda published against a man who fails to cign a statement at the behest and de mand of any coterie or group of men ; is to be taken as sclfisne.s pure and simple. " i .. Some of the ncwspnperg of this ' district lay irrcnt Hires upon the fact that Judge Butler is an orator. They fail to say anything regarding his fitness for the office of congress man. Nick Sinnott is not a great orator, still his work for this Htnte in congresi has been such that the president chose him from among the many to a respansible life uituutlon. Judge Butler is an able lawyer. He hag graced the bench of this dis trict several terms and his decisions were always accepted a8 being ac- j cording to law. and evidence. His knowledge of law rovers a vast , field. He is licensed to practice in all courts of the land and has a clientele second to no lawyer in Eastern Oregon. Ilia advice is , eagerly sought by others of his pro fession, and is always follewcd. j It take a man with a full know ledge of all laws to qualify as a fit successor. to Nick Sinnott.' By cast ing a voe for R. R. Butler, by writ-1 ing his name on your ballot, voters will be choosing a man well qualified to wear the toga of our retiring con- j gressmnn.
