Al.Had Friend.
Al had wired his wife that he
would be home Friday night At
midnight he hadn't shown up. His
wife became nervous .. and wired
four of the Indiana branch? ask
ing if Al was staying there.
Along about six in the morning
Al came in home, clothes wet and
muddy, having had to change -tires
and fix several punctures. Shortly
afterwards, telegrams began to
come in. They all read, "Yes, Al
is staying here tonight" Flash
and Fire.
There are valuable mineral salts
dissolved in the liquids that surround
canned vegetables and it should not
be thrown away. Use it in a sauce
served with the vegetable, or in soup
or gravy. Boil canned vegetables
for at laast 5 minutes before using.
Moldy bread may be due to wrap
ping the bread up before it is
thoroughly cool, or to lack of care
of the bread box. In addition to air
ing the bread box frequently, some
times scald it out thoroughly, and
dry in a warm oven, or on the back
of the stove, or directly in the sun.
Molds do not like dry hot air or sunshine.
paper. Apples or tomatoes can then
be fried in the fat and according to
the Bureau of Home Economics, U.
S. Department of Agriculture, make
a particularly attractive breakfast
dish. The following recipe is sug
gested for fried apples and bacon :
Select good tart apples.' Peel and
cut them in to 1 inch cubes. Fry
the bacon in a heavy skillet. As soon
as the slices of bacon are crisp, re
move and drain them on clean brown
paper. For frying the apples you
will need about one-fourth cup of the
bacon fat Put the apples in the hot
bacon fat, piling them up rather high
in the frying pan.. Sugar to taste.
Be sure you use enough sugar; apples
fried this way require a little more
sugar than apples fried in the ordin
ary way. Cover and cook slowly un
til tender. Then remove the cover,
and turn the apples gently, so that
the pieces will keep their shape. Let
them brown lightly; they are then
almosa transparent Place then in a
hot platter and surround them with
the bacon.
Oregon News Notes
If you are planning and equipping
a kitchen, think first, last and always
of the work to be done in it. Don't
make the room too big. Make a kit
chen oblong so that work centers
can be grouped to better advantage.
Growth and bearing of young fil
bert groves in Oregon are encourag
ing feateures of the filbert industry
as reported from the experiment sta
tion. Many four and five year old
filbert groves bore good crops of fine
nuts. While by no means great prof
it producers, they are indications of
what may be expected when plant
ings are kept growing steadily and
vigorously.
Fried Apple, and Bacon.
Thinly sliced bacon is delicious
when browned under the flame of
the boiler in a gas stove. It is then
free of excess fat, crisp and appetiz
ing. Good results can also be ob
tained by frying it in a heavy skillet
draaining the slices and absorbing a
large part of the fat with brown
