G. W. Mallatt and Elmer
Brown of Bakeoven Flat started
their combine today. From the
looks of the wheat in the 'field
they may expect a pretty fair
harvest.
Elmer Stilling:, with wife and
baby, are in ton today. Elmer
tells us that he quit the, Bennett
ranch and intends to go to Enter
prise and try his luck there.
For three days last week Gus
Reeder was wondering why the
water in the city water tanks
was low, no matter how long he
kept the pumps going, until one
morning the nicest little spring,
coming out from under the side
walk in front, of the Columbia
Southern hotel, solved the mys
tery. After close investigation
by John McCarg, our handy man
about towrv it developed that
the water pipe underneath
the hotel had burst and formed
a lake, Ja some places two feet
deep. -
C. B. Walker, inspector for
the Department of the Interior,
is in an 1 around Shaniko for a
few days, doing field work for
his department, so you home
steaders better look out and come
up to the requirements of . the
law. Mr. Walker knows the
country around here pretty well,
coming here on duty for seven
years', consequently understands
the needs and troubles of home
steading. J. A. Hastings, county road
supervisor at Antelope, states
that the work of straightening
and filling in the road at Cross
Hollow on the Shaniko-Antelope
road is progressing favorably of
late and that the roadbed will be
ready for rocking in about ten
days.
Tom Gavin, senior member of
Gavin-Wheeler Co., states that
business is very good- That
store has a large list of custom
ers from near and far, because
it handles most anything needed
in this territory. What elated
Mr. Gavin - most was that he
could supply F. R. Wharton,
Ashwood with (now don't laugh,
for it is a fact) two goat single
trees. There is many a country
store that does not know what a
goat singletree is.
Mr. Gavin had a phone call
from the Hartman store at Wapi
nitia asking him to inform P. E.
Conroy of the loss of a pack
horse in the mountains. Jt is
not known how the loss occured.
E. M. Stevens, of the Burnt
Ranch and Muddy company,
shipped about three carloads of
prime beef cattle to Portland
Saturday, half black and half
white faces.
Don't complain of the high
cost of living, better cut down on
the cost of high living.
The auction sale of Jim Robin
son was not very well attended,
owing to the busy season of the
farmers right now.
