E Hammer has' been 1 quite ill the past week. 1 Mr. and Mrs. A D Gronewald I were nut from The Dalles Wed jnesday to attend the comence jment exercises and were over 'night guests of Mr and Mrs. P. W. Lloyd. Mr. and Mr. Walter Driver of The Dalles were out Memorial Day, visiting relatives. Mrs. Nettie Woodside returned with them and will go on to Portland for a few days. The commencement exerices Wednesday night were very suc cessful and well attended. We were fortunate in having Pro fessor Thomas H. Gentle of the State Normal School as the speaker. His speech was ex ceed I y interesting and beneficial and sparkled with humor. The class consisted of four graduates: Anna West, Mary O'Brien, Crystal Hartman and Roy Wood side. Besides the graduates, Professor Thomas H. Gentle, Mr. and Mr3. A. E. Gronewald and Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Lloyd were guests. The association was organized last March, the charter members be ing Isham West, Roy Rice, Joesphine Woodside and Vivian Barzee, all of whom are gradu ates of the high school. Jose phine WooJside, president of the association, was toastmistress it the banquet.. Everyone is re ported to have had a fine time and it h intended te make it an innual affair. A number of parents gathered at the school house Thursday afternoon for the program given by the grammar school. The en tertainment was well put on and everyone enjoyed it. Roy Batty is busy building a new barn on his ranch The school picnic at Bear 3pring3 was very well attended Friday. About 20 auto loads of children and parents were pres ent. Baseball and big eats were the order of the'day. Lew McCoy, who has been taking treatment at the Vet terans' Hospital in Portland, ' re turned to his home here Sunday. Several men from here left Monday for Clackamas Lake, where they are employed in the forest reserve. . The road over the mountains via government land is in good condition just now, and a steady 3tream of cars is passing over it. W. A. Eleven Years Ago From The Timet June 4, '15 I A large number of new books have been received at the library, among them being several vol umes of fiction, sports, ethics, travel, biography and books for juveniles. Maupin won the game with Wamic Sunday, the score being 18 5. Next Sunday will mark a game between-Maupin and Ante lope on the local grounds. Three weeks ago, while fishing at Sherar, Vernie Roberts bruised his leg. No notice was paid the injury until last week when the limb began to swell, causing in tense pain. A day or so ago Vernie was about on crutches, this causing a return of the swell ing. During his confinement to the house Job Crabtree, Ray Kaylor and G. L. Harpham have taken turns carrying the Wap initia mail. Several Maupin gentlemen, othewise not employed, are en thusiastic over an outlook for u gold mine supposed to be located up the Deschutes a few miles. Miss Alice Bock with and Glen Morris were married at The Dalles Wednesday. Article next week. . Albert Britton and his sister were over in the Shaniko country looking at homesteads the first of the week. Mrs. 0. R. Ellis, wife of the new pastor, is still In the hospital at The Dalles, but hopes to be well enough to come to Maupin the fore part of the week. A party of emigrants from the coast in a couple of rigs and number of cattle passed through here Monday enroute to Crook county. The ladies drove and were wearing overalls while a boy brought up the rear riding a cow which wore a saddle, Henry Brown of Ridgeway nearly amputated two toes while chopping wood on Tuesday.
