SMOCK AND VICINITY Will Set Out Locust Trees In City Park At last a definite move looking to the improvement of the lots purchased by the city for park purposes has been made. Three hundred locust shoots have been secured and tresa will be set out. All he citizens of Maupin who are interested in having trees to take the place of sage brush are urged to be at the park site Sun day morning at 9:00 o'clock, car rying picks and spades and help set out the trees. R. & N. depot grounds will soon be leveled and made passable by the addition, of crushed rock, a carload of which was received Tuesday. Tom Connolly of the Rakeoven section came home from a trip- to Portland Tuesday. Miss Overman, after a severe siege of illness, has resumed her teaching duties at the Pine Grove school. ....... Homey and R. Ruffir motored to Maupin last Satur day. Evangelist Tiffany held ser vices at the Smock church Sun day afternoon. His subject "The Trials and Bravery of Daniel" was interesting and helpful to converts, young and old. He will be here again next Sunday afternoon. Sunday school at 2:00 p. m.; everyone invited. Miss Ethel Ledford, who spent several weeks at Warm Springs, returned home Wednesday after noon. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ayres came from Odell Saturday for a visit at the J. W. Ayres home. They returned home Sunday afternoon. Misa Sylvia accom panied her brother. She is attending school at that place.' S. W. Farlow spent the week at the old ranch, where he is feeding some cattle. B. Scott, of the Farlow ranch went to Dufur last week and while there purchased a number of dairy cows, bringing them home Saturday. Edw. Disbrow made a hurried trip home to see his mother, who has been quite ill, he returirig the same night. The annual meeting of the L. & B. Ditch compahy was held Saturday. The old officers were reelected. While on a return trip to Tygh last Friday E. J. Fischer's auto mobile turned turtle on the grade a short distance from this place and all occupants es caped injury, with only a slight damage to the machine itself. Herbert Hammer and Herb Lewis made a trip to The Dalles a few days ago and filed on an additional 160 acres under the enlarged homestead act. Harrison Young and his broth er-in-law, Fressie Martin, re turned Tuesday from the Cri terion country, where they had been in search of homestead lo cations. They succeeded in get ting some good land- Olive Turner has entered school in the first grade. Thos. Moss arrived in our midst a few days ago from Willamette Valley. He is look ing over the country with a view to locating here. The little four-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Miller has been quite seriously sick for the past week, and was taken to Porland last night for an oper ation. Mrs. W. H. Staats returned from Portland last Friday, where she has been on an important business deal, which means much to this section if consummated- Jack Donaldson sold his fine team of sorrel horses this week to Will Connolly.
