NEWS OF PINE GROVE Julius Shepflin and children, Ella and Robert, spent the week end at The Dalles, where Mrs. Shepflin is under the doctor's care. Ed. Beebe is doing the chores during their absence. Mrs. Shearer and daughter and Mrs. Palmet.er of Tygh Val ley were callers at the Walter Sharp home on Sunday, The Oak Grove school discon tinued for the year, Mrs. Clara Cross havingv returned to The Dalles. Hazel and Lee Laughlin will attend the i?ine Grove school. Rev. Mershon and Roy Ward were callers at the Medin ranch one day last week. Herb Hammer, George Beebe. and Walter Sharp, are cutting wood on the Dane place. Mrs. Jess Cox, -who has been indisposed for some time, is re ported to be recovering. The Sunday s chool voted last Sunday to send the contents of its Birthday 'box, amounting to nearly $5.00, to the mission work at Sui Lam, China, where three is a seminary for girls. Francis .Walters and son, Marion, havi; returned to Wash ington after an extended visit with relatives here. Because of the all-day holiday granted on the 22nd, the Pine Grove school postponed its Lin coln and Washington program Mntil Tuesday. j There uas a flurry of snow here on the 22nd, reminding us that winter' is not entirely past in spite of .wild flowers being in blossom. Most of ,the recent sufferers from grippe are able to be about once more, a nd the school at tendance is ap proaching normal Mrs. Tiraoth.y Linn and child' ren Eva, Junet ta and Babe, re- turned Monday evening after a few daysj at Linn's Mill. Bill Forman and family visited at J. S. Brown's last Sunday. WAP1N1T1A NEWS Wapinitia Church Service Sunday School 10:00 a. m., Mrs. Josephine, Floyd, Supt. Preaching 11:00 a. m. and 7:30 p. m., by Rev. W. A. Mershon, Pastor. Christian Endeavor meets at 6:30, Sunday evening. J. E. Sinclair and wife made a trip to Portland the latter part of last week. Plans for the C. E. social to be given on the evening of the 26th are progressing nicely. Plans for the candy booths have been perfected. The play has been rehearsed and is now rea y for production. Joe A. Graham returned from Three Sisters the latter part of last week. He was called there by the illness of his father, who died during Joe's stay at Three Sisters. The county road crew is doing fine work on the roads here. The work extends from the mar ket road to the bridge. The crew is putting in drains for the mud holes near the road. A dance was given at the O. S. Walters home Saturday even ing. Julius Shepflin .went to The Dalles Saturday. His daughter Ella, and Miss Crystal Hartman accompanied him. They went to see Mrs. Shepflin who is un der the doctor's care at The Dalles. ' " John Charles and family are here on a visty from Bend. Mose Delore, Jr., went to Maupin last Saturday to take in the show. Roy A. Ward and family and Prof. Halbard and "Bill," went to Maupin Sunday evening to at tend the special services being held there by Rev. Mershon. A fine Elgin watch was pre sented Rev. Mershon by the community and Maupin as a re membrance of his birthday. Mrs. Sinclair was chief solicitor of the funds. Rev. Mershon al so was the rebipient of a Bible. Dr. Elwoodof The Dalles was called here Tuesday to minister to Ben Cook. Mr. Cook is stop ping with his sister, Mrs. Rich ard Johnson. Jack Staats has become farmer the last few days. Mrs. Mamie' Ashley, wife of Walter Ashley of this place, died in Portland Oregon, today, She had gone to Portland for her health. Besides her husband she leaves one daughter, one sister and four brothers to mourn her loss. ' Ed. Brown has gone to the Mays ranch for a while, and it is thought the fish will now come out of their hiding places. He is the official fisherman of Mau pin. ' Hurstel Hollis has just filed on a homestead about five miles south of here. Miss Phyllis Fischer, who is teaching at Wapinitia, was down and spent Saturday and Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Fischer. G.W.
