Who said California? Around Maupin spring posies are coming out, pussy willows have been buddine for a couple of weeks and the hills have taken on a covering of green. No snow, very little frost and sunshine every day. Who'd rather live in California than in this garden spot of Oregon ? There are two things in this country that are better off when they are not tinkered with. One is the Bible and the other the Constitution. The law against counterfeit money ought to be suspended when it is used to pay for boot leg liquor. Maupin vs Antelope The Maupin High basket ball team is determined to clean up on all the school teams here abouts, the last victim being Metolius. The next team to fall before the local team's onslaught will be that representing the Antelope high school. The game will be played in the Maupin school gym; promises to be hotly contested. Our boys are im proving with each game played and are as cocky and aggressive as any team in this section. This is the reason we say they will win for there is nothing so encouraging as a feeling of in vinicibility. Resurrected Dances Doa-aDos, swing your partners grand right and left, and other old-time dance calls are again heard in the leading dance halls of the countrv. Henrv Ford, by inviting and old-time fiddler to play for him, has resurrected a style of dancing in vogue many, manv veara aeo. and now all the old-timers, yes, and many mod ern devotees of the dancing art, are indulging in the quadrille, Virginia reel, monev musk, rve waltz and dances familar to all old-timers. In keeping with the trend of dancing the American Legion post of Maupin will hold one of those old-fashioned dances at the hall in MauDin on th eevening of Saturday, January 25. Real old-time fiddlers will pound time and render tunes made .tamous durine days of long ago, and all the intricate and fantastic measures of those days will be called. The altair promises to he one of the best vet held in Maupin and everybody will be there and partake ot the enjoy ment of the evening. A Real Watchmaker There are watchmakers who, when you take your timepiece to them for repairs, will always find many things wrong and make as much as they think you will stand out of the job. Not so with Guy A. Pound, the lead ing n.-nrr-hprnf The Dalles. Mr. Pound will sell you just what ails your ticker and fix just that nilmpnr. charcine you but a fair price for the work. He is an ex pert in that Imeot worn ana an watches intrusted to him will re ceive his personal attention. If your watch is out ot orcier Dring it to this office and we will send it to Mr Pound for repairs. Home From Hospital Mrs. John Donaldson, who has been at the Hamilton hos nital in The Dalles for the past month, returned to her home near here Monday. While at thfl hosm'tal Mrs. Donaldson un derwent a serious operation, but says she is feeling much better now. The particular piece of hen fruit measured 51 picas around the long way and 41 picas around the middle. (Picas are the basis of printers' measure, their being six picas to the inch.) Reduced to inches the egg was eight and one-half inches around the long way and six and five sixths around the middle. F. hall on the evening of Friday. January 15. Picked Up About Town Dr. Stovall says that getting an automobile license these days is harder than getting married Gus Derthick is authority for the statement that bootleg whiskey would be a good thing to put in the radiator if it wasn't for the fact that it would eat away the rubber hose connec tions. "One thing I could never un derstand about a real estate man," declares Lester Kelly "is why he does't hold it and make the money himself." "Scientists," states Prof. Geiser, "say that English will soon be the universal language." Yes, they'll be speaking it every where on earth except in New York. El " According to Rill Williams it is often as safe to blow out the gas as it is to step on it. "The meanest man I ever heard of," said" Line. Harpham, "was , the Georgia man who sharpened his knife on his first wife's tombstone so he could cut his second wife's throat." El Tom Henneghan says that the "the-fashioned boy whosed to be told he would end his days on the gallows because he played marbles for keeps, now has a son who openly boasts of his a bility as a crap-shooter."
