Bids For Wood
The Board of Directors of Mad
ras Union High School, Madras
Oregon will receive sealed bids
for 70 cords of wood to delivered
and corded on the school grounds
not later than July 15th. 1923.
Wood to be measured on the
grounds. : Bids will be accepted
for fir, pine, or juniper in four
foot lengths and not more than
10 inches at the large end. Bids
will be opened May 5th. 1923.
The Board reserves the right to

The County Library has just
sent down a new collection of
books for the Maupin Library
Station which is located in the
Shattuck Bros, store. The libr
ary is now supplying the Maupin
station with more than the aver
age sized traveling library as the
demand for books has been large
and the regular traveling library
of fifty volnmes has not been
enough to supply the demand.
The new collection which Mrs
Cyr has just received includes
books by many of the well known
writers of the day and others
that are just as good but not
quite so widely advertised, as
well as some of the older but pop
ular authors of both fiction and
nonfiction. Some of the authors
represented in this list are Emer
son Hough, Bower, Hergesheim
er, Joseph Lincoln, Zane Grey,
Booth Tarkington, Bindloss, Mc
Cutcheon, Knibbs, Will Irwin,
White, Deland, Hemon, Kyne,
and John Fox, Jr. The list in
cludes a good many different
types of stories, so that those
who want adventure, mystery,
or romance will be able to find
something to their liking. For
others who want something be
sides stories there are also a
number of interesting and worth
while books.
The boys and girls will find at
least twentyfive good books for
their reading.
The County Librarian, Miss
Carr, reports that the last library
collection which Mrs. E. A. Cyr
sent in from Maupin, had a total
circulation of 493. Maupin sta
tion is now rated as one of the
best stations in the county for
the Use made of the library books
The circulation from the adult
books was 362, and that from
the children's 131.

David Sharpe moved their
household good from Pine Grove
to the West place the first of the
week. The house they formerly
occupied at Pine Grove will be
occupied soon by Nathan Hill
and family. Mr. Hill expects to
work in the mill at that place.
Rev. Richards and son of Boyd
were at Pine Grove Sunday at
tending the Sunday School bask
et dinner Mr. Richards is County
Supt. of Sunday Schools his pre
sence and talks were much ap
preciated.
Omar Lloyd spent Sunday with
Ernie Endersby.
Alva Hammer who has been ill
with typhoid fever is able to be
up.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Gabel and
children visited at Ben Formans
on Sunday.

Marion O'Brien.

A number of folks went IVm
here after church last Sunday to
attend the basket dinner at I ine
Grove. All report a good time
and splendid lunch. Of course
we are expecting great things at
the picnic which they are soon
to give us, providing we win in
the contest. Last Sunday Pine
Grove had 66 attendance and
Wapinitia 51. If you don't come
to Sunday School you'll have to
put up for the picnic. Remem
ber.

were callers at Mrs. Julia Ender-

Jackson Rice made a trip to
Maupin Friday.
Mrs. E. A. Hartman returned
from Portland last Sunday.
Mrs. Geo. Burnside lost an in
cubator and eggs last Sunday bv
fire.
Mrs. W. O. Wilson has been
visiting the past week in Hood
River and The Dalles.
Mrs. Hill has returned from
Smock where she visited her
parents. -
Mrs. Geo. and Calvin Burnside
made a trip to Smock on Monday
for apples.
Pine Grove and Oak Grove
schools close on Friday and the
occaaion will be celebrated by a
joint picnic.
F. G. Magill and son Robert
accompanied Geo. Magill of
Wamic to Portland Sunday where
they visited Vera Magill.
The Powell-Batty school closes
this week.
Mrs. Leevans and baby of Tygh
Valley are visiting at the Bert
Hammer home for a short time.
Mrs. Jacob Teschner carried
Mrs. Bates Shattuck stepped
on a nail this morning, it passing
almost through her foot.
W. C. Vanderpool drove over
from Dufur today. He and Van
Moad drove down from Nampa
Idaho a couple weeks ago, and
will spend the summer in Oregon
Mrs. Vanderpool is caring for
her nephew at Tiernan, near
Eugene. They expect to go to
Sheridan later.

home at Pine Grove.

Little Elizabeth Rutherford
met with a very painful and
quite serious accident Wednesday
noon when she turned suddenly
and caused her mother to spill a
pan full of boiling water over
her left cheek, neck, and should
er. They brought her to Dr.
Elwood who dressed the burn to
day. Fishing and hunting licenses
may be obtained at R. E. Wilson
Co.
F. C. Butler has a new 'yaller'

on it.
Mr. Bragg is substituting at
the 0. W. R. and N station
while Mr. Bell is taking a short
vacation.

complying with tin; postal laws
in having regulation boxes.
Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Jones from
Tygh were Maupin visitors Tues
day. Work is progressing rapidly on
the R. Johnson house, ii being
near the finishing touches.

About fifteen relatives gather
ed at the Calvin McCorkle home
Sunday to celebrate Mr. McCork
le's birthday and wedding anni
versary.
Fen Batty, former night clerk
at the Umatilla house, who has
been residing of late in San Diego
Cal., arrived in The Dalles yester
day to look after ranching inter
ests in Wapinitia and vicinity.
Soon after his arrival, however,
he had rounded up two pals of.
former' days, J. W. Adkinsof
the Bank' hotel, and Tom Kelly
of the Elk's club, and the three
proceeded to spend the day re
viewing old time incidents and
experiences. Each had been
employed at the Umatilla house
when that famous in wa3 living
through its palmy days. Twenty
five years ago the three served
at the hotel in the following
capacities. Fen Batty as night
clerk for 16 years, J. W. Adkins
as steward for nine years, and
Tom Kelly as head bar-tender
Gospel Meetings
Beginning tonight, Elder P. W.
Province and wife of The Dalles
are here and will hold a series of
meetings in the I. 0. 0. F. hall.
They are of the Seventh Day
Adventist faith and will lecture
on the prophecies reiatingjto the
coming of the Lord and the end
of the world, the Judgment,
Millennium, The New Earth,
Armageddon and other kindred
truths. The public k invited to
attend these meetings. Seats
free.
School Notes
It was decided that the play
would be given May 11. The
place has not yet teen decided.
Most of the characters ore get
ting their parts well under way.
The name of the play is "Al
Martin's Country Store," a com
edy in five acts.

Maupin city council met in
regular session last evening with
all officers present except Wood
cock and Stovall.
Two bills were ordered paid.
Ordinance No. 24 relating to
licensing of hawkers and ped
dlers was discussed; the decision
reached that it was insufficient
to reach present needs and does
not provide for daily license.
Conncilman Shattuck was re
quested to draft a new ordin
ance, revoking the former and
that will better cover the needs.
Ordinance No 48, providing
for licensing, expounding and
killing of dogs running at large
was passed, becomes effective
May 15. License fees are $3 for
male animals Bnd $5 for females.
Dogs not licensed will be en
pounded and held for 48 hours,
during which time owners may
ransom a dog by paying $5. In
case .not redeemed, killed the
following morning at 10 o'clock.
