TINY INSECTS CAUSE TREE'S BLUSH CHangs of Color Which Had Long Been Considered Remarkable Is of . Simple Explanation. A tree which changes color blushes like any school girl is, something of a curiosity, and for some time the cause of the blush puzzled botanists. A German savant, indeed, Is said to have begun a ponderous treatise on the subject, when the explanation was discovered, not by Teutonic theorizing, but by simple examination. The blushing tree is found In the Florida swamps, and assumes its mod est and mysterious glow of color dur ing and for a short while after a rain storm. As the wet drenches its foli age, a change of hue at once takes place. Gradually the green gives way to pink, which creeps over the leaves, deepening as It goes, till in a minute or two the green Is gone. Only by examining closely under the boughs, broad leaves, and on the trunk, are a few streaks of green to be detected. The tree, on the whole, is as pink as DECEIVES TWO WIVES FOR YEARS Baltimore, Mk While John C. IRVING KING (ffl, 1923, by McClure Newspaper Syndicate.) Peter Hampden was thirty-five and looked ten years older, for his had been a busy life, from which he had cut out all superfluities like yachting, golfing and marriage. When barely of age he bad bean known In the street as "the old young man." How a man of thirty-five came to be trustee or young lady approaching twenty-nve was this way. uanuice juimurus grandfather had, by will, appointed Peter's father trustee of the estate of his orphaned granddaughter, with power to appoint his successor, and Peter's father had bequeathed tne trust to Peter. After Candlce had done with her finishing school Peter had seen a greatdeal of her, for John Randall and he had many business Interests together, and It was with Mr. and Mrs. Randall that Candlce made her home, Mrs. Randall being Candice's aunt. In summer Peter was constantly running down to the Randall country place for the week-end, reconciling himself to such an Indulgence by the fact that there he could talk shop with John without fear of interference by other business men. But If Peter saw a great deal of Candlce he also saw a great deal of a certain antique side board he had in his bachelor lodgings. He admired them both and was watch ful that nothing untoward happened to either but to Peter a sideboard was only a sideboard and a girl was only a girl. They were all (except the sideboard) down at the Randall country place on Long Island. The house was full of guests, as usual, for Mrs. Randall was fond of entertaining, and, moreover, was de termined that Candlce should have an opportunity to select a first-class ar ticle in the way of a husband. Can- dice was horribly hard to suit, her aunt thought, but she nevertheless went on displaying her wares and dis coursing on the texture and quality of each exhibit like a good "saleslady." She had considerable hope of mak ing a sale this season. Willie An struthers and Calvin George were pay ing fast and furious court to Candlce, and for a wonder Candice appeared to be encouraging them. Peter, who had Just arrived, was sitting with Mrs. Randall on the piazza when Can- dice, with a young man In attend ance, came strolling from the direc tion of the lawn. "Who Is that with Candlce?" asked Peter. "Young Anstruthers," replied Mrs. Randall, "and I do hope she will take him. It's time she got married. If she doesn't take him I think she will choose Calvin George, who Is a good mafth, too. I was beginning to lose all patience with the'girl, but of late I have begun to have hopes of her." "Hum-m," said Peter, thoughtfully. Candlce in connection with marriage was somelhing new' to him he re quired time to assimilate the Idea. That evening as Peter, having pinned his host Into an obscure corner of the piazza, was upon the point of convincing him that an amalgamation of P. Q. & C. with the C. T. & K, would be an excellent and most prof itable combination and wouldn't hurt the anti-trust law, Mrs. Randall came and retrieved her husband with "John, you really must come and speak to the Hetheringtons they have just motored over from Glen Cove." Mentally anathematizing the Heth eringtons, Peter sat glooming in the gloom when there appeared to him a graceful, white-robed figure and a pleasant voice that said: "Oh, Mr. Peter, I am so 'glad to catch you alone. I have been watching for .an opportu nity to ask your advice." She always called him Mr. Peter. It was a com promise between Peter and Mr. Hamp den. "My dear Candice," replied the man of business, "as your trustee, to give you advice Is of course my duty as well as pleasure yes, pleasure, I am sure. What is It? Your Investments are" "Oh, It Isn't money," cried Cadlce a trifle petulantly. "It's about well about getting married." "Mrs. Randall said something on the subject to me this afternoon," re plied Peter. "There are two young men under consideration, I under stand. The matter Is entirely outside my Jurisdiction, I am merely trustee of your property. But since you con sult me I must say that I don't see why you need be married at all." "But It Is rather expected of one Isn't It?" replied Candlce demurely. "Well, yes of women I suppose It Is rather expected," admitted Peter reluctantly. "Willie Anstruthers 4s a very nice young man," ventured Candlce. "Humph I Don't fancy him, growled Peter. "And Calvin George Is considered a great catch," she went on. "No business ability whatever," said Peter, emphatically. "But of course If you are really In love with either of these young men but this is en tirely outside of my Jurisdiction. "But suppose," said Candice, "that I wasn't In love with either of them, bat with some one else?" "Oh, In that case what sort of business man Is this other?" "An excellent one," replied Candlce, with a little giggle. "And of a suitable age?" "Just ten years older than myself," shyly. Correct in his habits?" Oh, remarkably so." 'These things are Important," went on Peter, "for when my trusteeship terminates your husband would natur ally be the one to look after your business matters. Be will find every,- thing In order and that your fortune has considerably Increased under my care which reminds me that the time is fast approaching when by the terms of your grandfather's will, I must re linquish the supervision of your af fairs." "And you say that' my husband would naturally be the person to look after them?" asked Candice. "Yes, when I give them up," replied Peter. "But I don't want you to give them up." . "Why?" asked Peter. "You are too stupid for' anything," cried Candlce angrily as she arose and hurried away. Outside of busi ness Peter could not see an Inch be yond his nose and It was a remark ably short nose, too. Candice's angry parting outburst had left him utterly bewildered but It set his mind at work thinking of the young lady, her ways, her looks and her mental qual ities In an analytical manner which heretofore he had never eihployed with regard to them. At last he said to himself : "Well, she will be a prize for somebody," and with a sigh arose and went to bed. But bis sleep was broken and his dreams were ail of Candice. By morning his mind was made up; the true state of his heart had been revealed to him but he felt like saying all the time: "This Is so sudden." And It was. Candice scarce ly spoke to him all day; avoided him openly and ostentatiously went out for a long morning's walk with Willie Anstruthers. But In the evening Peter caught her alone for a minute and said: "Candice, I would like to continue the management of your es tate us your hnshnnfl. "Oh, thanks, awfully," replied Can- dice pertly. "But I accepted Willie Anstruthers for the Job this morning." At this Peter let himself go. Was he, indeed, too late? All the love and passion which had been lying dormant for years came to life and turned to burning words of pleading upon his lips. I am afraid," said Candice Inter rupting him, "that you were a trifle slow at there Is aunt calling me," and she ran swiftly away. Peter strolled moodily out to the. grove and there, In the dark shadows of the trees, came across Willie An struthers walking pensively. "Mr. Anstruthers," said Peter, "I under stand that Miss Mlnturn has accepted your suit. As her 'trustee " Accepted me I" cried Willie. "The deuce she has 1 She gave me the mit ten without benefit of clergy this fore noon." Peter hurried back to the house and found Candice. "You witch," he whispered, "what do you mean by playing with hearts? Why did you tell me you had accepted Willie An struthers?" "Peter," replied Candlce with a mis chievous smile, "I suppose you are too straightforward a business man ever to have made a wash sale to send up the market?" I think you will agree with Mrs. Randall that it was high time Candlce was provided with a husband. BARBERS IN BIBLICAL TIMES Occupation Specifically Mentioned and Otherwise Referred To in Pages of Scripture'. The word barber Is only once men tioned In the Scriptures, namely, In Ezekiel 5-:l, which reads : "And thou, son of man, take thee a sharp knife, take thee u barber's razor, and cause it to pass upon thine head and upon thy beard. ..." Although barbers are not often ex pressly mentioned,- yet from the con stant mention of shaving and the In cident of Delilah sending for a man to shave Samson, there can be no doubt that his class existed among the ancients. The Hebrews were partlcu larly careful of their heads and beards, and ail seem to have applied the razor except the Nazarites, who were un touched by It from their birth. The Egyptian barbers were called khak or shavers, and they are represented at work in a tomb of Benl-Hassan, of the Twelfth dynasty... holding their razors in the hand, which have a short cylindrical handle, with a broad, flat blade of bronze on a line with the axis of the handle. , Added Things. .
