SEPTEMBER 28, 1923 THE YEAR $.M) WATCH m School Notes Those winning prizes at the Tygh Valley Fair were as fol lows: Winnifred Kaiser- -1st in second division of sewing. Olive Turner 2nd in second divi sion of sewing. Jean Wilson 1st in first division of sewing. Florence Philmlee 2nd in first division of cooking. Helen l'hil mlee 2nd in first division of can ning. In the canning demon stration, Maupin was awarded t second prize, Wapinitia winning first. Winnifred Kaiser won a trip to the State Fair at Salem for having the highest number of points. Her mother will ac company her. A special meeting of the Stu dent body was called to order Monday for the purpose of con sidering the revised constitution submitted by the constitutional committee, it was adopted by a unanimous vote. In the way of further business a committee of four consisting of Mabel Cyr, Erma Morris, Floyd Richmond rnd Orland Walter was appoint ed to investigate prices on bask et balls, volley balls, volley nets, etc., for the athletic work for the coming year. This com mittee is also empowered to make a budget of all the expen ses that said committee could foresee to occur during the year. After these expenses are totaled the student body will then raise money to meet them possibly by series of encertainmmU- Excavation for the new high school was started Monday. The high school now claims a total enrollment of nineteen students. s The entering of Ildaand New ton Miller raised the granin.er room enrollment to twenty-six. The eight grade pupils are sor ry to state that one of their class mates, Margaret Doss can hard ly get around on occount of a severely sprained ankle. The primary room has a total Wapinitia F. G. Magill and wife went to Wamic returning Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hammer made a trip to Smock Tuesday for fruit. i Mr. and Mrs. Joe Batty visited I with Ry Batty and family on Wednesday. Mrs. Grey did not return to 'her school work until JV'onday noon, J. I. Parker substituted for her in the forenoon. Mrs. Maddron, Earl Ftirzee and John Ward were Muipin visitors Sunday. Robt, Ellinwood and N. G. Hedin, went to The Dalles, on Saturday. Ella Shipflin is abseut frtm school this week because of sick ness. Miss Tulle spent the week end at the Shipflin home Mr. and Mrs. Booth of Sim nasho were in town Monday. Several members of the Mott family are on the sick list. Mr.and Mrs. Andrew Booth of Wamic visited at Powells on Monday. Richard Delcoe had the mis fortune to break his arm at the races Saturday. Mrs. Brown and little son went to Portland Saturday and return ed on Tuesday. Rev. Parker and family and Mrs. Maddron were guests to Sunday dinner with the Burn sides at Pine Grove. Philnat Loyd spent Tuesday with Claire Parker. Joe Graham was out from Clackamas Monday. i Ben Forman was in The Dal ies last week on grand jury. ! Ed. Bernard has purchased a cir. I W. A. Dane is in The Dalles on jury duty. I Alba Heckler returned home from Three Mile last Saturday. ! E A. Hartman lost a truck .last Saturday when Walther enrollment of thirty-one. Clyde Flinn and family were registered at the hotel this week They returned to The Dalles on Monday. There will be an all day meet ing of the Sunday Schools of this and neighboring communities next Sunday at the Grove. Ccme and bring your lunch. Clarke Smith and Mr. Zell sf The Dalles will be two of the speakers. II weather is not fit for out door services, the meeting will be at the Wapinitia church. Wapinitia boys and girls recei ved their share of the prizes given at the fair this year as usual. Mr. and Mrs. Job Crabtree were visiting at Herb Hammers Sunday. They took Mrs. Davis horn e with them. The shower which sell Tues day evening was very much appreciated by the farmers of this location. Mr. Lake drove a car tul from tie Gannet Motor Co. Un, Ken nedy and Lucile Kennedy came out with Mr. Kennedy to attend the fair. Charley Crofoot purebred a piano last week from the Fwan Piano Co. of Portland fi i his daughter Velma. A. E. Lake has exchanged h s phonagraph for a new Pruts-! wick from the G. E. Corson music store. Mr. and Mrs. P. Bailey, of Portland, Henry Harper and W. A. Harper, of The Dalles were guests of Mrs. Margie Harper in Tygh Valley during the 'fair. Herman Gesh bought a piano from the Corson Music Co. in The Dalles. Clarice Zumwalt who was taken very ill at the fair grounds Friday with an attack of intestin al flu is recovering. Mrs Ike Driver was attacked with intestional flu while at the fair Friday. She is able to be up again- Dr. and Mrs. Short were here from Dufur attending the fair Jimmy Patison came up from Corvallis to attend the fair. He visited relatives here. Judge Fred Wilson, Judge Adkinson, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hunter and Miss Cordelia Rond eau were attending the fair from The Dalles. Dan Gibbs, of Dufur attended the fair. This is his first visit since he moved away several years ago. Pierce Mays was up from Portland to attend the fair. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Brittaiu and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey McClaine came from Mill Creek to at'end the fair. Wilbur Wing has sold his farm to his father, Ed Wing of Yakima Wn. Johnny Chastain and Mrs. Liberty Chastain arrived Friday from West Fall. Mrs. Oustain mother, Mrs. Fakey accon pain ed them as far as The Dulles. Dr. Elwood was called to Clackamas lake Friday to attend Mrs. Jane Kistner, who had a severe attack of intestional flue. The warm days and cool nights are still with us here, thoigh the weather is some what cooler than it was a week ago. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Mufeit. Miss Vada and Carmie Chandlc were over from Grass Valley to ottend the fair and visit relatives The fair at Tygh Valley was one of the best and was well attended. The general display of exhibits were better than evei before and the many novel feat ures of entertainment interested the crowd. Dick Butler bad u jar of pldms that his mother canned thirty three years ago on exhibition at the fair that attracted much attention. Earl Saunders with his air plane and piolet C. N. Davis and acrobat Danny Cno were at the fair from Portland. BLACKSMITHING I have opened a hlacksmith t all- around blacksmithing at my old stand opposite Woodcock's mill and am prepared to do work at reasonable rates. A. F. Leonard Farlow returned to Corvallis for another years work John Ayres and family return ed to the old homestead to live after an absence of two years. Miss Vina went to Monmouth on Saturday where she will attend State Normal the coming year. J. W. Farlow shipped lions to day from Maupin. To Clear Title Suit to clear title to prcperty in possession of Charles N. and James M. Farlow was filed in the circut court this morning against T. J. Driver, et ux. The suit envolves the purchase of the property in question at a sheriff's sale shortly alter Driv er's term as sherig of Wasco county had expired. Driver is alleged to have purchased the land at this gale, a;id then turn ed it back to Charles and James Farlow in codsideiation of the purchase price. Driver never gave a deed, in this transaction however, it is alleged, and a court order which would take the place of a deed is sought. Chronicle, Friday. Mr. and Mrs, J. N. Batty and sons Kenneth and Buddy arrived Tuesday from Eightmile for a short visit with relatives- Ket -neth will attend high school here this winter.
