"Sporting One's Oak."
"To sport one's oak" Is a phrase
signifying that one is not at home
with visitors. The saying originated
at the English universities, where the
students' chambers have two doors
an inner and an outer one, The outer
door is made of oak, and when this
is closed or "sported" it denotes either
that the occupant of the apartment is
out or that he does not wish to be
disturbed.
To Remove Lead in a Gunbarrel.
Chemically pure and strong nitric
acid will dissolve the lead and not
attack the metal of a gunbarrel unless
the acid becomes diluted with a little
water. To remove the acid, pour all
of It out and wipe the gun dry with
a rag soaked in olive or cotton seed
oil. Do not get the acid on the hands
or clothing. If, by chance, this hap
pens, wash it off Immediately -with
water and then with some weak alkali.
Tides Dispose of Sewage.
In Boston and many other coast ci
ties the tides are utilized in the dis
posal of sewage, part of which is held
In reservoirs until strong outgoing
tidal currents have developed. Before
the turn of the tide the sewage has
been carried so far that it has become
mixed with an immense body of ocean
water and is rendered harmless.
Better'n an Ice Wagon.
When two little Irish boys asked a
woman In an electric machine for a
ride, she looked into the upturned
dirty faces and couldn't resist. While
driving to the street they had desig
nated they sat .perfectly still with
eyes focused straight ahead, but when
they got out she heard one say: "Gee,
that's better'n ridin' a ice wagon,
hain't it?"
Worth Remembering.
The joy unshared loses half its
sweetness, and the grief borne alone
doubles Its bitterness. We were not
meant for solitude but for sharing
and when we are enjoined to love our
neighbor, lt is for self-preservation as
well as for helpfulness.
Pursue Happiness Too Strenuously.
We all seek happiness so eagerly
that in the pursuit we often lose that
joyous sense of existence and those
quiet dally pleasures, the value of
which 6ur pride alone prevents us
from acknowledging.

Portland. With spring nearly
month later than usual, thereby de
creasing the danger of damage from
frost and giving the trees and bushes
a longer season of dormancy, pros
pects this year are declared to be
good for one of the best fruit years in
the history of the state and of the
northwest. It Is still too early to give
any definite predictions owing to the
fact that rainy weather or a touch of
frost during the blooming season
might cause damage. However, there
IS less danger of this with a late sea
son than with the ordinary season.

Gates In a Roman Camp.
The "praetorian gate" was the name
of the front gate in a Roman camp.
It was always the gate that faced the
enemy. Every Roman camp had four
gates. The "decuman gate" was op
posite to the praetorian gate, and was
the farthest from the enemy.1 The
gates on the right and left sides of
the camp were called respectively the
porta principalis dextra and the porta
principalis sinistra.

The name "daddy longlegs" is ap
plied in the United States to creatures
closely related to spiders, while in
England it is given to the crane flies.
Strained Music.
The organist at Gloucester cathedral
declares that the present vogue of
wearing hair over the ears Is responsi

opinion is open to criticism, but it is
generally admitted that lt would be
better if some singers wore the hair
over their mouths instead. Eve
