ADVANTAGE OF VELVET BEAN
When Properly Dried It It Distinct
Addition to Protein Concentrate
for Cattle.
When- properly dried before ship
ment, velvet bean feed Is a distinct
Dddltlon to the protein concentrates
at the disposal of northern feeders,
In the opinion of Dr. J. B. LIndsey
of Massachusetts station. It has
proved slightly better than wheat bran
for making milk. It may constitute
as high as 40 per cent of the grain
ration for cows; but 20 per cent for
pigs and horses Is considered enough.
Doctor LIndsey recommends for cows
a ration of 40 per cent velvet bean
feed, 40 per cent corn or hominy meal
or ground oats and 20 per cent cotton
seed meal or some other high-grade
woteln concentrate.
GOOD PASTURE FOR FILLIES
It Is Not Possible to Secure Beit
Growth of Animals Unless Grain
Is Also Fed.
Experiments conducted by the Uni
versity of Illinois show that purebred
draft fillies can best be produced when
good pastures and legume roughages
form the basis of their rations. Too
much emphasis cannot be placed upon
the Importance of good pastures.
Although abundant pastures and leg
ume hays reduce the grain require
ment, it is not possible to secure the
best growth unless grain is also fed.
3IG JAP STUDENT TOO MUCH
Washinflton Freshman Tried to Haze
Him, but He Wag Too
Strong.
Seattle, Wash All Japanese are
not easy marks, as fifteen boys of the
freshmnn class at the State university
beve can testify.
Last fall a real sport matriculated
- '. nnn of TaJtro Ogawa, a burly
Japanese ! boy, who stands nearly 6
feet high. He Is a giant in strength
too, and had been employed all sum
mer In a railroad section gang in Mon
tana. He Is thirty years old and has
been In America ten years.
This year he decided to enter the
university to study engineering, and
as soon as the freshmen learned of
this they planned to hazt him. The plan
failed to the chagrin of the students.
More than thirty-five of the young
bloods of the university captured the
Japanese and attempted to shackle
him. He broke one boy's nose,
blacked more eyes than be has fingers
and toes, tore a part of the scalp oil
Andrew Barker and severely Injured
eleven other boys. At least 15 of the
class were unable to resume school
work, while the smiling face of Ogaws
appeared as usual in the classroom.

What This Buffalo Physician
Has Done For Humanity
The picture which appears here of
Dr, Pierce of Buffalo, N.Y., was taken
In 1910. As a voung man Dr. Pierce
practised medicine in Pennsylvania
and was known far and wide for his
great success- in alleviating disease,
lie earlv moved to Buffalo and put up
in ready-to use form, his Golden
Medical Discovery, the well known
tonic for the blood. This strength
builder is made from a formula which
Dr. Pierce found most effective in
diseases of the blood. It contains no
alcohol and is an extract of native
roots with the ingredients plainly
stated on the wrapper. Good red
blood, vim, vigor and vitality are sure
to follow if you take this Alterative
Extract. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical
Discovery clears away pimples and
annoying eruptions, tends to keep
the complexion fresh and clear. This
Discovery corrects the disordered con
ditions in a sick stomach, aids diges
tion, acta as a tonio and purifies the
blood. Write Dr. Pierce s Invalids
Hotel in Buffalo, N. Y,, and receive
confidential medical advice free. Send
10c for trial pkg. tablets. All drug
gists sell Discovery, tablets or liquid.
CUTTINGS FOR GOOSEBERRIES
Plants Should Be Placed 8lx Feet
Apart and Cared for In Sams
Way as Currants.
Gooseberries are grown from cut
tings like currants and also propa
gated by mound layering. In follow
ing this method the tops are cut off
In the early spring leaving stubs four
or five Inches long. Many new shoots
will grow from these stubs, and when
they are hardening a little In early
summer the lower four or five Inches
of these shoots Is covered with a
mound of earth. Each shoot will then
send out roots, forming a number of
Independent plants. The earth Is tak
en away In the fall and the young
rooted plants cut off and either planted
or kept slightly moist In earth or moss
till spring. Gooseberries should be
planted six feet apart and cared for
In the same way as currants, says the
United States Department of Agriculture.
Work on All Cane Fruits Should Be
Dona Just Before Sap Commences
to Flow,
Pruning of berries and all cane
fruits should preferably be done In the
spring just before the sap commences
to flow and after all danger of killing
frosts are past. Danger of winterkill
ing where fall or winter pruning Is
practiced Is great, because the open
end of the cane permits the frost to
travel down the Boft center of the
canes to the roots: That Is why spring
pruning Is to be preferred. In this
pruning, remove all dead canes from
the previous season's fruiting canes
and also thin down the present canes
to not more than three or four sturdy
ones to each old, established root
stock. Quality berries are worth more
than a quantity of Inferior berries
and these quality berries are produced
only where the roots are not overtaxed.
Trees Planted Too Closa.
Most orchard trees are planted too
close for best results. While this can
be remedied In the planting of new or
chards we have to take conditions as
they are found In the case of the older
orchards and make the best of them.
Peculiarity Hard to Explain,
It Is a peculiar thing that the names
given live animals are of Saxon origin,
but those given to meat when dressed
and prepared for food are Norman.
For example, the words "ox," "steer,"
"cow" are Saxon, but "veal" Is Nor
man; "sheep" Is Saxon, but "mutton"
Is Norman; so It Is severally with
"swine" end "pork," "deer" and "veni
son," I'fowl" and "pullet."
SPRING PRUNING PREFERRED
Keep Berries Productive,
Berries kept In a strong, sturdy con
dition by careful and systematic prun
ing and by constant cultivation Just
as one would cultivate the corn field
will remain productive for years-
Good 8ale for Plants,
Good varieties of strawberry plants
should sell well next spring, as many
fields have not grown new runners Id
the usual quantities.

Art Is No Recreation.
Art, properly so-called, is no recrea
tion; It cannot be learned at spare
moments, nor pursued when we have
nothing better to do. It Is no handi
work for drawing-room tables, no re
lief of the ennui of boudoirs; it must
be understood and undertaken Borl-
ously, or not at all. "Modern Paint
ers," John Ruskln.
Dehorn Calevs Early.
The removal of horns from dairy
cattle Is a practice which Is to be com
mended under most conditions.
Provide Comfortable Quarters.
Warm, comfortable quarters are Just
as necessary In successful calf rearing
as correct feeding.
The Harvest Moon.
The harvest moon Is the one on or
nearest to the 21st of September, har
vest time. When nearly full It rises
for several consecutive nights at about
the same hour. A poetical playwright
points out that it Is a kindly arrange
ment of the Creator for the benefit of
lovers. There Is at that time a small
angle between the moon's orbit and
the horizon which causes this com
plaisance on the part of the queen of
the night.
Little Susy at Church.
Little Susy was taken to church by
her mother for the first time. During
the long sermon the child grew more
and more fidgety, and kept wriggling
about. Finally she became very great
ly interested In a Bmall tear In her
dress and, after looking at this ab
sorbedly for a little while, site jumped
to her feet on the seat, and to the
great mortification of her mother,
cried out: "Has anybody in this crowd
got a pin?" Minneapolis Tribune.
A Personal Application.
We have never sunk to our neck in
quicksand and struggled to get out,
but we know the feeling. We have
tried to get out of debt. Arkansas
Gazette.
Too Much for Muslo Lovers.
Jud Tunkins says what broke up the
singing society was the threat of the
richest man in town to foreclose mort
gages unless his daughter was the
leading soprano.

Stella Newton, R. R. 8, Portland,
You should carefully guard
your daughter's health. Advise her of
the danger which comes from standing
around with cold or wet feet, from lifting
heavy articles, or overworking. Do not
let her oversturly.
If she complains of headache, pains In
back or lower limbs, or if you notice a
slowness of thought, nervousness or ir

give her careful attention.
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com

daughter to take, as it is especially
Adopted torelieve just such symptoms.
Remember it contains nothing that can
injure and can be taken in safety.
Needed Explaining.
A pompous old gentleman was ad
dressing a gathering of English work
men and during his remarks he urged
them to "Be industrious! Shun In
dolence and remember that sloth Is
the parent of necessity." As he paused
to let this sink in a man in the rear
sung out: "Look 'ere, mister, I've
'eard it said as 'ow necessity Is the
mother of Invention if so be as it is,
then sloth is invention's grandmother,
and Bummat's wrong somewhere."
