Substantial Development
Just here we want to say a few
kind words about our home town.
There has been, in the columns
of this paper more or less discus
sion as to what has been and
what not has been accomplished
by the citizens of the town of
Maupin.
September 10th, as we all
know was a day of disaster, a
day that comes alike to all
"shacjc-built" towns sooner or
later, but "From the Anhea of
the Past rise3 the Triumph of
the Present", and we.the citizens
of Maupin, are working to make
this so, not only in the line of
actual reconstruction but alo a
reconstruction of Bervico and
community and co-operative in
terewt. The recent movement on foot
to incorporate the town is well
under way and is favored by all
interested. This will provide a
city council endowed with cer
tain authority in the matter of
civic improvements of various
kinds and will serve to knit the
loose ends of community interest
into a body capable of "putting
over" the things which each of
us individually realize the urgent
need of, but of which in the past
we have been powerless to per
form. The subject of incorpora
ting will come up in the near
future as a voting issue and we
have no doubt but. what it will
carry unamiously.
Again we point with a certain
amount of pride to Maupin 's
Quick recovery from her disaster
ous fire. Within a day almost,
costumers needs were being
served and had it not been for
the unfortunate tie-up in regard
to location the town would have
been rebuilt within at the most
60 days. February 1st finds
most of the burned part of the
town rebuilt in concrete and
steel and with three good stores
instead of the former two. F. C
Butler, formerly with Shattuck
Bros, has branched out for him
self in the grocery and meat line
"Things to Eat" and is located
in his new concrete structure on
Deschutes St', Cold storage, so
successfully handle perishables
in the summer heat will be one
of his special features. The R.
E. Wilson Company have located
opposite the Tum-A-Lum corner
with a complete general mer
chandise and implement lii e as
before- Shattuck Bros, have re
built on their former location, a
tiO by 'JO Concrete all-plate 1'iont
building and within a few months
promise us one ot the lineal
equipped stores in Wasco County
And anyone with half an eye
could seo that H- R- Kaiser has
made some strides himself in the
way of a better shop than form
erly. A movement is on foot to
locate the Postoffice in the un
occupied part of his building and
this would make an ideal location
for it.
Other new business buildings
are planning for Spring work
just what they will be or where
located is not decided at present
but the Maupin State Bank will
undoubtedly put up a modern
fire proof building just as soon
as the weather permits. Any
number of dwellings are contem
plated, and Mr. Renick of the
Tum-A-Lum Co. says prospects
for a busy spring were never
better.
Uo not lose sight of the fact
that the Dalles-California i3
routed and surveyed through
Maupin and that the Deschutes
river is claimed by experts to be
the greatest fishing stream in
the United States today; "Home
of the Giant Redside"; with the
new hatchery now under actual
construction at last it means
that the Deschutes Redside will
continue to be plentiful as well
as famous, and it is going to be
pretty hard for an ardent angler
their name is legion, - to pass up
our town. One of the first
measures that will undoubtly
come before the Council if the
town i9 incorporated is the im
portant item of providing a
suitable camping place for these
visitors.
It is not to be overlooked too,
that the Deschutes is one of the
greatest power streams in the
Northwest and we look with
interest to the developement of
at least a small part of this for
local use in lighting' the town
In closing let it be said again
that it is the defirc of the citizens
of Maupin to make our town an
open invitation to our neighbors
on the Flat and accrcss the river;
we want and desire your good
will and support; the business
men deBire that you make their
places your own to serve your
need3 both in a social and busi
nss way and you will find them
wiping to figure with you and
fu'nish you what information
they may be able to impart on
thii jfs of interest to you; in other
worl and to make a long story
short COOPERATE.
