WATCH IPtF MAUPIN GROW & MAUPIN TIMES 5 Devoted to the Interests of Southern Wasco County VOL 8, NO . 18 MAUPIN, SOUTHERN WASCO COUNTY, OREGON. THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 9.192L THE YEAR $130 Who is the Maupin Commercia Club? What are They? And what have they done? Definition The Maupin Commercial club is a body of common people who to themselves took the oath that they would join in the public well fare of the community in which they live, and while so doing forget their own selfish interests for the common good of all. In talking of their doings for the last year and a half of action it would seem very common if put in print, perhaps, but never theless is worthy of mention. About the first it did was to get together for a general clean up day in Maupin, and actually hauled by donation work several truck loads'of tin cans and refuse from practically all over town. Through the efforts of the commercial club, the Oregon State Chamber circulated several thousand copies ofa little cir cular telling of Maupin and community, telling of climate, location, principal products, future possibilities etc, all ex pense borne by State Chamber. The Maupin Commercial club upon the suggestion of Johnnie West and Joe Graham who happened to be in Maupin one day, met Mr. Scherrard of the forestservice .and possibly are directly responsible through this meeting for the Mt. Hood loop connection with Wapinitia if it comes in the next year or so as expected. Of course we must not fail to mention that our County com missioner L. B. Kelly, also Mr. Hedin I believe were present at the meeting, which was held in the Maupin State Bank. Through co-operation several things have been accomplished in so short a time. The most valuable perhaps is the selection and election of a county commissioner, chosen by the Wapinitia and Maupin com mercial clubs as the proper man for the place, and elected by co-operation with The Dalles, who fell right in line with the idea that Southern Wasco County needed representation and gave our man the largest vote in the history of elections. Also co operation with The Dalles made it possible to mantain the l.'tilles California Highway for Wtjsco County route. Added to by i be Dalles by bridging the Columbia above Tin? Dalles makes this high-way an international high way you might say as it furnish es a direct route from Canada 'to Mexico. Maupin Commercial Club sent delegates to interview our comity court and try and let the COURT know in an intelligent manner what was desired by the com munity, which is a much better way in my judgement than one, two, or three individuals meeting our county court without the knowledge of the balance of the population and trying to give the desires of the community, as they mignt make a mistake. , And I must say that our Go.unty Court has given The Maupin Commercial Club a willing ear, and has shown all the curtesy ex pected each and every time they were called upon. The Maupin Commercial Club had delegates present to inter view the State Highway Com missioners at Portland when the location of The Dalles California highway was at 6take and was sliding to Sherman County for various reasons. These delegates were accompaind by more Wasco Come and see us; a new man is in the Shop. Who is he? A man with the Knowledge Bring you car in. WARNER, Shop Foreman B. D. FRAREY, Manager MAUPIN GARAGE County Commercial Club dele gates 21 in all, including; our County Court, who co-operated Won? I'll say we won, don't vou remember 'Trout Fry in Maupin' 'Pagent in The Dalles' banquet at The Dalles where Mr. Barrett, State Highway commissioner publicly announced that this body of men, above reffered to carried the most weight, made the deep est impression on the Highway commission, than any body of men the commissiun had met since his election, because- there waa harmony unconditional. There was the trip to Kalamath Falls and way points with The Dalles, Wasoo County Club dele gates, our delegates, Mr. Bolton and Mr. Stsats, who stood their own expenses, unless we pay it. Have we forgotten the fieh (iai':hs7 at Oak Springs? A i e we going to pay our part? D ' we vant cooperation? hi s going to ignore the tnanv calls from the Oregon State Chamber of : Commerce who are always willing to co operate ? Are w 'arge enough to grow without the nurishment of mu tual coopeia'ion? Does not the past history of even so email an organization as the Maupin Commercial Club, prove that whoever is good for Mai pin town is good for its community, its cuunty, its state? Are we going to ignore the needs of our community and is our community goii-g to ignore our needs? Is The Dalles like gome Sea Monster who is ready to gobble us up at the least promotion? If you hold this view, put your self in the place of the man who n fiction, wa3 lost in the det'i't, no water, nothing to eat, cn.ly wind and sand until he thought1. he would sink for sure, then arrived at The Dalles, have vou ever arrived there feeling like the man in the sandstorm? Sure we have a rocky road to reach The Dalles, who is at fault, The Dalles, or our lack of organization? There is lots and a plenty to be said about organ ization, organization gives trength. co-operation v gives power, whi ch carries with it a knowledge and a satisfaction of work well done. Time will show the intentions of all evils, time will give us or ganization and strength to develop this 'wonderful country of our, around Maupin. H. L. Morris Sec. Maupin Commercial Club 1921.
