Narrow Escape from Deatli Durintr the recent snow block ade Jim Woodcock and Tedium Crabtree narrowly escaped with their lives while shoveling snow and ice from ths platform ol Woodcock Bros, grain warehouse on the O. W. R. R. & N. track, the heavy snow and ice on th iron roof suddenly gave way. The men, hearing the slide com- inar. iumued to the edge of the platform to escape being crush ed, but the momentum of tht slide carried the snow and ice far out to the edge of the plat form, striking the men at their ankles and precipitating them head foremost to , the railroad track some 20 feet below. With the assistance of E. C Wood cock thev were able to free themselves from the mass of snow and ice. Mr. Woodcock suffered a sprained arm and Mr Grabtree's hand was badly lac erated. Some little excitement was caused Monday about noon wlier the Worrell residence was fount to be on fire. Several men ant some women came to the rescue and extinguished the fire. It wat caused by the stove pipe coming unjointed in the garret. No ser ious damage was done. The remains of Miss Alexan der, who, while teaching schoo at this place three years ago was stricken with pneumonia and di ed, were taken from their rest ing place a week ago Monday anc conveyed to Toledo, Lincoh County for final interment. lnspite of the pitchy darkness f the evening and the drench- na' rain falling in gusts of wile torrents Saturday night a gooc sized audience listened atten tively to the splendid program rendered by the talent of the Ladies' Social Club. The eve ning's entertainment was gotter up and conducted solely by tht Udies, and the whole perform ance was rendered by young Udies and little girls except one or two pieces, wherin two oi three small boys figured' Aftei the program was over the dining room doors were thrown oper and coffee with sandwiches and cake was served at ten cents s eip. The affair was most suc cessful both from a literary and financial point, Earl Rhoads is employed at th? Jim Brown ranch. Plenty of fresh ground corn meal at the Valley Roller Mills. Mr. A. M. Young has lately received a letter frcm his father win about two months ago decided to visit the east. Going to Adams Nebraska, where he met a sister whom he had not seen for fifty years. After spending some time there he visited relatives in Minneapo lis Minnesota and no doubt would have remained all winter had the winter suited him. Mr. Young says tnat ne went ine wrong ime of the year. As he is ex pected to visit Tygh Valley soon we will endeaver to assertain more fully why he returned to Oreoron auick. We think the weather had a zreat deal to do with it. It is rumored that as soon as spring weather settles Tygh is to have a planing mill and lumber yard. Tywasor Grange will hold a public installation and basket nipper Friday (tomorrow) night at the hall. The public will bi admitted after eight o'clock 11 are invited to attend. WAPINITIA The patrons of the Oak Grove school met at the school house m the evening of December 20 to enjoy the fine program and Christmas tree which had been gotten up under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Bradley. The weather on that night ,vas all that could be wished for and the sleighing was fine. The school house was well fill ed and tastefully decorated; a large tree filled one side of the upper side of the room while se ats were arranged for the child ren on the other side of the chim ney. . The tree was loaded with gifts both useful and ornamental. After the program was finish ed there came a sound of bells from over head and in a moment Santa Claus (Guy Peterson) came, down the ladder which had been thoughtfully placed by the side of the chimney af ter a few word3 of greeting to the children, Santa Claus, assisted by Mr. Henry Peterson and O.S. Walters proceeded to distribute the gifts. There was much laughter when Mr. Ben Fore man received a white flannel rabbit and a bag of candy, while the teacher received a rag doll. Every body went home well pleased and all joined in wish- ng their their teacher a merry Christmas. The school has done well under the able management of Mrs. Bradley. The Royal Neighbors will hold their election of officers Wednes day evening December 18th. Everv Neighbor is requested to be present. Georee Gibson and wife, of Portland, relatives of the Moads, were visiting in Tygh this week on their way to John Day to vis it Mr. Gibson's brother. Raymond Jones went to The Dalles the first of the week to meet his parents who have been visiting in the valley. He was accompanied by Rev. D. D. Dodge.
