A spark from a match or passing traip nr emitted from the exhaust of an automobile en gine, or a lighter! cigarette or eigai stub thrown carelessly aside, on easily Hturt, a fire which, with surroundings favoring its spreading, will result in Incalculable loss and destroy a quan tity of grain, sufficient to furnish an entire community with food. Where conditions permit, furrows should be plowed between the grass and the grain. If this is not possible, the grass should be mowed close enough -to afford a check to the spreading of fire. A New Hazard. A comparatively new danger to grain fields is wtite-hot carbon discharged from 'the exMausts of tractors when pulling up hill or through a heavy pnrt of the crop. Every exhaust should be protected by a fine wire screen, which should be renewed at least once a month, as the heat becomes so intense as to quickly destroy its effectiveness When the grain has been threshed and mlcd in the field, it should be pro terted by a suftieient number of fur rows to prevent its destruction from the burning cf stnbMe. The time of one of -the grea dangers to jrrain and gr.iin Holds in the North west is during the threshing season and in caused by careless methods in threshing aud piling the threshed grain too near to the straw stack). Every threshing machine by the very reason of its operations collects a certain "" ,,f which is high- y inflammable and subject to explo sion, and the farmer should insist that before a threshing machine commences operations on his settings the machine bo. thoroughly cleaned out, flues exam ined and water tanks kept full. If possible, the straw stacks should bs re moved every night, but where this is li"t. possible then under no circum stances should the threshed grain be piled so close to the threshsr or the ohieh are susceptible of spontaneous combustion unless the barn is suffi ciently ventilated to carry off thes gases, hvery particule of dry grass ' and all litter and rubbish should ba I Viimnvi1 trnm Vittrnvord artA fvrtm all open name should ne strictly prohiB ited ani' lnl,y closed lanterns or elee trio pocket flashlights allowed in or rrouml barns carrying any quantity of hav.
