ESTIMATED 1921 APPLE CROP Commercial Output Placed at 18,000, 000 Barrels Compared With 38, 000,000 Year Age. Federal estimate put the apple crop this year at 108.000,000 bushels as compared with 240,000,000 bushels last year and a five-year average of 103,000,000 bushels. The commercial crop for the country is estimated at 18,000,000 barrels compared with 38, 000,000 barrels last year. Prune Pear Trees Regularly. Churchill, state super intendent of schools, has returned to Salem after a week passed In eastern and central Oregon attending teachers' institutes. He reported increased at tendance in most of the schools and said no difficulty had been experi enced this year in obtaining in structors. Eugene. A farmers' institute Is be ing planned for Cottage Grove Novem ber 15, 16 and 17, according to an nouncement Saturday of Ira P. Whit ney, county agricultural agent, who Is co-operating with B. J. Edwards of the extension division of the Oregon Agricultural college, the Cottage Grove chamber of commerce and the Eugene chamber of commerce. Hood River. Stanley C. Walters, chief forest ranger of the county, just back from a tour of inspection, report ed that the six-mile stretch of grading on the Mount Hood loop highway on the northeast base of Mount Hood is nearing completion. Crews will break camp in the next few weeks, he said. Slashing crews, Mr. Walters said, have finished five miles through dense tim ber in the vicinity of Horsethief meadows. St. Helens. A conservative esti mate of the building done and now in progress in St. Helens during the last six months is placed at $125,000. Most of the buildings have been residences the business bouses being the new office of the Columbia River Stevedor ing company, the new Spokane, Port land and Seattle depot, which cost $15,000, and the business block of Mrs, H. F. MeCormick now under construe tion and which will cost $35,000. Eugene. The concrete pavement on the west side Pacific highway, just south of Corvallis, has been opened to traffic, affording a continuous 40-mile stretch of pavement between Eugene and Corvallis and eliminating a bad detour just out of the latter city. The opening of this pavement also fur nishes a paved highway between Eu gen and Portland except for the sec tion of 12 miles between Corvallis and Albany and a mile between Barlow and Canby. Portland. The Brownsville woolen mills at Brownsville, Or., will resume the manufacture of woolen goods by next spring, according to present plans, and with that end in view the installation of new machinery and the overhauling of the mill la to be taken up this winter. J. L. Bowman of this city, while on a recent trip to Browns ville, assured the people of that com munity that the mill would be started again as soon as machinery could be obtained for a two-set mill. Salem. Demand will be made upon the catastrophe fund of the state in dustrial accident commission for the first time since the department was created as the result of an explosion at the mines of the Beaver Hill Coal company in Coos county Friday. In order to provide for such accidents the workmen's compensation act was amended in 1919 and a fund establish ed by setting aside $50,000, accord ing to W. A. Marshall, chairman of the state Industrial accident commis sion. There is now $100,000 in the fund.
