As to Immortality.
If I am wrong in thinking the hu
man soul immortal, I am glad to be
wrong; nor will I allow the mistake
which gives me so much pleasure to
be wrested from me as long as I lire.
But if when dead, as some insignifi
cant philosophers think, I am to be
without sensation, I am not afraid of
dead philosophers deriding my errors.
Again, if we are not to be immortal,
it is nevertheless what a man must
wish to have bis life end at its prop
er time. For nature puts a limit to
living as to everything else. Cicero

Huck Finn Was Considered "Harmful."
It is Interesting to remember when
one sees "Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn" listed as one of the 30 books
necessary for all-around culture by the
New York public library, that when
the book was new, some 25 years ago,
the Boston public library and others
about the country refused to place the
book in the circulating departments.
The reason, as published, was that the
book would be harmful to the youth
ful mind. Milwaukle Journal.
No Longer Popular.
No matter how black or threatening
the outlook, keep working, keep vis
ualizing your life dream, and some un
expected way will surely open for its
fulfillment. The abiding faith in a
power which will bring things out
right in the end, which will harmonize
discord, has always been strong in men
and women who have done great
things in the world. Orison Swett
Maiden, in Chicago Daily News.

Egyptians First In Field.
The earliest objects that civilization
possesses in the way of ancient pot
tery show that the Egyptians were
pr6bably the first to use glazes, but the
practice may have originated Inde
pendently wherever a knowledge of
early glazes were of the alkaline type,
which had to be first fused Into a glass
before It could be applied to pottery.
Didn't Have the Price.
Returning home from the dentist's,
where he had gone to have a loose
tooth drawn, little Raymond reported
as follows: "The doctor told me 'fore
he began that if I cried or screamed
it would cost me a dollar, but if I was
a good boy it would be only 50 cents."
"Did you scream?" his mother asked.
"How could I?" answered Ray; "you
only gave me 60 cents."
As a Business Proposition.
The Westminster magistrate, the
other day, described a prisoner as "a
very clever thief." It is said that the
fellow Intends printing this testi
monial on his letter paper. Punch,
London.
All Want More.
An eastern capitalist says too much
money Is a bad thing. We have yet,
however, to hear anyone admit that
he had too much.
Many Missing.
Every year no fewer than 30,000
persons are reported missing in Lon
don alone. Some of them are never
seen nor heard of again; others, after
weeks or months of absence, return
and take up the threads of their for
mer life as if they had never left It

But They're Scarce.
Our idea of the right kind of girl

Unfortunate Oversight.
Jud Tunkins says the man who used
to think It was cheaper to move than
pay rent has discovered that he reck
oned without his next landlord.
The Uninvited Guest.
One evening I dropped in to see
some Intimate friends. When I en-
tered the house I discovered to my
surprise that they had friends for
dinner. Before I could excuse myself
their youngest daughter, Elizabeth,
asked me if I had been invited to the
party. Upon answering in the nega
tive, she Bald, "Well, why did you
come?" Chicago Tribune.

Playing Cards.
Although it is commonly reported
that playing cards were invented in
France In 1392 to divert Charles VI,
D'Allemagne, a French writer on the
subject, mentions them as being in
use in Belgutm in 1397, and probably
something analogous to them marked
discs or counters have been employ
ed In the East from remote antiquity.
It Is now usually thought that It was
in Italy playing cards were first made,
about 1370, and at Venice.

adoiso.-A wheel rolled out In

along nt a merry clip northward In
Boul Mich. Mr. Brunts laughed. It
was peculiar to see a wheel wander ng

He henrd a crashing of glass, the
clanging of a hell, the shriek of a
police whistle, the clutter of heavy
soled shoes on the pavement and a
few hnrsh commands.
Mr. Brunts stopped. Ills halt was
due partly to curiosity und partly to
the fact that he couldn't go any
farther. Something had anchored Ills
car to Randolph street It coughed,
sputtered and listed to starboard.
Just as the motorist got out to se
what might be the trouble an auto
mobile loaded with policemen turned
the comer and spilled Its cargo to the
curb. The policemen with pistols
drawn, dashed Into the fur shop of
John T. Slinyr.e, 1,'rO North Michigan
avenue, calling loudly for ever one
within sight and lien ring to surrender.
Mr. Brunts was their only customer.
It was discovered that the myster

ment of his own car. It had hopped
over the curb In Randolph street Into
the plnte glnss window of the Ebayim
company, setting off the burglar alann.
