RUSSIAN GOLD SHIP
MENT MISTRUSTED
Washington, 1). C. Inquiry into tho
source of the recent shipment of Rus
sian gold to the United States has
been ordered by tho department of
justice. Belief exists at tlio depart
ment that the gold may bo a part, of
the Russian bolshevik propaganda
fund.
Receipt of the shipment, totaling
$339,036, was announced last week by
(lie federal reserve board In lis peri
odical statement on gold exports and
imports. This was tho first ship
ment of gold front Ilusaila to the
United States since lute in 1916. Of
ficials of the hoard said they hud not
yet identified the shipment or lis
consignee.

Redlands, Calif. Mrs. T. D. Stewart
celebrated her ninety-first birthday
Monday by registering as a voter for
the first time In her life. Her years
have dulled her hearing, but she Is
otherwise in good health.
"What Is your affiliation?" asked
the clerk. "What Is my affliction?"
said Mrs. Stewart, and then as the
question was mado clear, "Oh, I'm a
democrat.; but I suppose you repub
licans would call that an affliction."
1 Dead, 5 Shot In Raid.
Philadelphia. One policeman was
killed and five other men were wound
ed in a three-cornered fight betwoen
policemen, alleged gamblers and ban
dits whom the police found holding up
the gamblers when they went to raid
