WOULDLOCALIZIHG MEAT TRADE PAY? Senator Currie, Stock Raiser of Nebraska, Makes Ex pcrimcnt. Meat Is high ; tlio packers admit It, though they say that other foods are higher In proportion. The farmer says ho Is not getting too much for his cat tle. In fact not enough, he says. How about numerous local slaughtering plants scattered throughout the com munities of our country, or a more dl-rect-frora-farmer-to-consumer relation ship There la almost a sentimental attrac tiveness about the thought, like dreams 'of one's boyhood b'lrae. It looks so simple. Indeed, It Is simple after 1 fashion, and Is the way most meat was handled before the Industry grew to national and International propor tlont. Hut would It ray? j Tried to Build Up Local Market. ' Kxperlmentatlon and testing Is doubtless the beat teacher. And In quiring minds have not hesitated to dtg Into the matter. Senator T. M. Currie of Broken Bow, Neh., himself stock raiser, relates a bit of expe rience of his own along this line. He tried for years, he tells ns, to establish a market for fat cattle with local butchers, Invariably finding that he could not meet th price made to them by the packers. "In other words," he saya, "the pack era could pay us more for our cattle on foot, and sell the product to our Iapb! hiitihar tnp inmn mnnnv Ihan thev (the butchers) could cor u for I Uf caftl and slaughter the beet tnenv selves." During the fore part of the present year he carried his Inquiry further. Be shipped two carloads of cows td I Omaha, and they were sold to Armour ! and Company for $7.90 per hundred-1 weight Among these was one cow which he wished to have himself for : hf. This cow weighed 840 pounds I tid therefore brought him $86.36. The j animal was tagged and the Identical carcass was shipped to him by ex pws to Thedford, Neb;, and charged to hlra at the prevailing whole- sal rr'ce of such meat on that day In Kansas City, Omaha and Minneapolis. The carcass Included carrying charges of about $6.00, cost him $60.11, or 15.25 legs than he sold the animal for In Omaha. What Cow Would Cost Consumer. "Now," continues the Senator, "sup pose a consumer in umana una ur dered this meat direct from me, and I had slaughtered the beef at the ranch and sent the meat direct to the con sumer. Taking as a basis the price received for this cow In Omaha, $66.38, less th freight of 17 cents per hun dred, It would make the cow worth on the ranch $65.00." To this $65.00 he adds $3.00 for slaughtering at home and $8.00 for ex press from Thedford to Omaha, and h deducts $7.00 credit for the hide. According to thrse figures the dressed carcass of his cow would be worth $07.00 In Omnlin, as against the packers' price of approximately $54.00 (which Is derived by deducting the ex press charges to Thedford, $0.00, from the price the carcass was sold to him, $60.11). Cheaper to Buy Than Kill. "After thorough Investigation," the Senator says, "I am convinced, that It does not pay for us to slaughter our own meat at the ranch; that we would better ship our cattle to Omaha, and buy our beef from the packer. I have been engaged In the cattle producing business all my life ; there Is no particular reason why I should be friendly to the packers, but I am thoroughly convinced I am re ceiving, and always have received more for my cattle on foot, than If I had been able to sell direct to the con-, sumer, and consequently the consumer has been able to buy my product for less money through the packer than under any other system which Is known to business up to the prescat time." V7 Edward Cooklngham, Oregon War Loan Chairman, who tends Armistice Day greetings through local Liberty J.oan Committee. rermlt me to extend greet- Ings to yoursolf and your citl sens, and to join with you in the celebration of the first an niversary of that day destined to become memorable In his tory, which commemorates the glorious victory of our country and Its allies In the great world war. I again congratulate the people of your community upon the overwhelming success which they achieved In the several Liberty Loan campaigns. The record of your district Is a last ing monument to their self sacrifice, and will be an Inspira tion to Americans whenever their country again stands In peril. ' On this occasion shall we not pledge anew our lives and for tunes to our country and Its In stitutions and resolve to bear our oMlgstlons of cltlsenshlp today with the same serious and hlghinlnded enterprise that was shown In the dark days of the war? Let us not give less freely to our country now In the face of domestic peril than we gave when It confronted foreign enemies. On this anniversary we cele brate the fulfillment by our sol diers and sailors of their obli gations, but our citizen army is not yet discharged. It has as sumed obligations which must be paid In full. Your record during the war Is undoubted assurance of quick responso to every call of your country for financial surport. I am sure it is only necessiry to remind your cltUeas of the deficit In Oregon's War Savings quota to make certain its prompt subscription. Oregon has never failed.
