The chairmen of tho different committees ou Iourtli ot July celebration met at the Barzue hotel Monday and plans are well underway for one of the grandest celebrations ever held in this sec tion. Plan on July 3, 4, 5 at the Abbott grove. Splendid camping place with plenty of good spring water. The Commercial Club met at the school house last Saturday evening. J. S. Brown was elect ed president of the club and L. D. Woodpile manager of the ball team. After the business of the Club, the school, which closed Friday, gave a fpleudiu program to a full house. Mr. and Mrs. Bigbee went to Tygh Valley Tuesday where they will ppeml the summer. Mr. Hertzler has purchased tLe Ilartuian saw mill and will con: mence operations soon. Rev. Hartman of The Dalles ha been here the past week hold ing meetings at the church. NEWS ITEMS OF LOCAL INTEREST Big Fish A fishing party consisting of A. L. Anderson, E. J. Styer, L. C. Bordeaux, May 13, 1919 Dear Folks: I will write you the last tiuie from Frauce for we start for the boat at 10:80. 1 received , the Maupin Times this morning, dale April 11. It was only a mouth and two days on its journey. 1 was lucky in getting a four teen day furlough; went to Lille, Kyp, Bruaeells, Belgium and along the Iliudenburg line from Archeas to Soissions and out to L i feam on the north end of the battle of Arogoh. Saw many in teresting sights, only ran out of time. Cot to camp the Grtt of May and was put into the barber shop to trim up the boys -for homeward journey. We had sev eral dances and shows just bc-f&re leaving camp and whon we left at 4.30 the 10th, all of the boys weie out in ppite of the awsul rain storm. Mr. Roberts will now live at Wapinitia and bring the mail from there in time for the rooming train, reluruiua wtien me aiternuon mail arrives. This will give tho Wapinitia peo ple almost 24 hours quicker mail. The local mail seryice now is not couimouced until 8 o'clock, giving the local postal employes au hour and a half more time for sleep.
