OUR COMMUNITY-AND ITS NEEDS (Contributed) Several veari alio the United Slates piivernmetit established a Bureau (.1 Chi IdrcnV Welfare, and get experts to wurk to ascertain (i good many different things relat ing to children, number of birtliB, percentage of deaths in infancy rate of growth and development: in fact, everything about the lives of the children of the nation as a whole. From this ponderous mass of information it will be possible in t.hfi course of time, to deduct varsous facts that will tend to con serve human life and make for healthier, hapyier childhood, it is hoped. By'givinp a greater number of children a better start in life, it follows that a ereat deal of the deficiency, that came so prouiin antly before us in the recent draft can be eliminated and a corres ponding!? gt eater number of nor mal people can be fitted to meet life and leave a still stronger pos terity to inhabit the earth. But this is looking at thing? as a whole. There muet be a divid ing, a coming down to the state, to the community, to the individual. The national institution can coop orate with the parent;, and the parent who fearlessly does his duty by raising Ins children in the bast possible manner consistent with his eitiuuistauces, niUit de pend to a great extent on the c immunity, especially after the first few years of the child's lise. Physical health may be endan g rdd by many community failings and moral health much more so. Of what use is a great, strong humau animal, without a corres pondingly strong mental and moral character? And hero, more than any where else, is where n good, clean, intelligent, and liye' ly community spirit and weigh so much in the efficient Mr. and Mrs. Cecil I unison are utter lise of the children of thatistaying in Tygh with her father particular community. The creat war just ended was' met by Americans with a great crv'for the summer. of Liberty and Justice; with the idea that right and not might chould he the governing force of the whole world. The Germans and many other people need just this way of lookine at things, doubtless, if the world is to be made a fit place to live iu. Cut let's not send our ideals all across the water. Let's apply some to our own community Let's get right down to brass tacks, be hyneet' with ourselvee. If my boy gets drunk is it all my fault? Or if ho gambles after I bayo exhausted eloquence on deaf ears, exactly who is to blatne? Now these things are againBi the laws of lha stale. Shall we tollow eur own prescription of right, doing the right thing bi cause that means following the will of the majority, as expressed in our laws, and thereby protect ing our children; or will it be nec essary to bring ihe representatives of force to compell us to do justice to our own fellow men? It is-n't so idealistic aB sending an army to foreign lands to compel alien people to do our will; but since we have sestering sores of our own in Bight, let's clean up our own back yard a while for a change.
