Anyona with avsrsga powers of ob servation who travel at the present time over any pertion of the Pacific Coast, will not young men clad in the bow familiar khaki uniform, with rifles over their shoulders, watching the approaches to every bridge and tumnel of any importance or strategical value. These troops art on duty day and night for the purpose of safeguarding the Nation's railway communications, so important ia the present crisis. The same orecautloa will alio be seen at all prominent shipbuilding and manu facturing plants which are working in th interests of the United States. All of these steps are taken to prevent any Interruption in the campaign of preparedness in which the country ia ' engaged in the meeting the stern issues ef the war. The guarding of these vsrious prem ises has been brought abnut through the National Board of Defense, which has also under consideration the thor ough extension of this system of pro taction to all warehouses and other depots where the food supplies of the eouitry are kept in storage. Many of these warehouses, however, particu larly in the Btates of Washington, Ore gon and Idaho, are situated at isolated pointa, and as the National Board and various Stat Councils of Defense can not perfect plans for th guarding of ths premises, it becomes the patriotic duty of every American citizen to lend his aid and to "do hi bit" towards rendering the food supplies in his neighborhood Immune from danger. Fir Wast and Food Supplies. One of th grtat problems presented to th Board of National Defense in th ear and preservation of th food supplies of th United States ia ths fact that th Or wast of th's country is so greatly in excess of thut of any ther nation. Statistics covering a 20 year period conclusively show that the pr eaplta fire cost in the United States is ever seven times that of the nation with which we are at present engaged in war, and that to every man, woman and child in this country there I US of 12.51 each year as compared with per capita cost of only 35 rente ll Germany. The statement hue been nude, aad it remain incapabl of sue sessful contradiction, that If the lame wastage by Ire (listed In Germany as in this country, the consequent loss and destruction of food supplies would have busn so great that Germany long since would have been compelled to sue for peace. With this faet before us. It i esy to reallie that unless we chsnge our mstbods and overcome our habits of cirelessneas this great Nation faces th serious danger of defent through fault which common sense and caution n th part of each Individual citizen tould easily prevent. Pacific Coast especially Favored. Nature ha keen peculiarly kind to those who reside on this Coast. W have few adverse weather conditions to contend with, and all our people live udr luch comparatively easy and fa vorable surroundings as to beget habits of carelessness and lndihsrni'e towards the ordinary hatarda of lire. Under normal conditions these hshlls might b fraught with a danger fftfly Ignored lad with few results of vital sitiirl eane, but In th present crisis snd need for th preservation of ill food supplies, these same bsbits ef careless in and isdlfferenr can quickly as urn th important' of National catastrophe. That Federal and Stat official are beginning te reside the magnitude of thi danger is evidenced by the fact that In many of the Htstes a special eoura of education Is being given to th school children by fir prevention iptrta, who point out th danger re eiilif rrom th careless handling of ssatche, th accumulation of litter and rubbish in basements, wooilbouses. at tlra and aterernores, lark of care in the as f eivsl oil snd gasoline, th hang tng ef electric cords over nsils, and th sncNMis other hsbita of carelese MM that almost universslly prevail In ry household. Free one of the school superintendents had th need of cleanliness forcibly brought to bis at tention by hie young daughter who had listened to a lecture on fir pre vent Ion at th afternoon session of the wheel and wh took him down Into their basement and stood watch over him while he cleaned up th cubbish which he had carelessly allowed to ac cumulate, whll a perfect wav of chimney cleaning swept evar on of th citiee ef th Stat eaused by a stat nent to th eheol children that their "house wct in dtngsr of catching flr if th chimney had sot bcn U4 within a ysr" Times Months 5cts, Three Month 50c matter September 2, 1914. at the under the Act of March 3, 1879.
