Charles Lake and sister, Mrs. J.

of the death of their brother,
James Lake, who was injured in
aii automobile accident Friday
night.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Batty of
Wapinitia spent the week-end at
the home of relatives in this city.

Sunday, December 2nd, will be
a big day here. Bishop Washing
er of the Pacific coast district, and
who just recently came from the
east, and Rev. G. E. McDonald,
conference superintendent have
announced that they will be here
over next' Sunday and hold servic
es and dedicate the churcb. There
will beseveralt services during the
day, and in the afternoon the
Maupin and Wapinitia Bands
have promised to come and furn
ish the music. Everyone is cordi
ally invited to attend. An old
fashinoned basket dinner will be
s-rved. Come aud bring well
tilled baskets.
A genuine rain is falling here
tod-iy, Wednesday.
Mrs. Geo. Ileitz left here Mon
day for Aberdeen, Wn., where Mr.
Heitz is employed in the ship
yards. Mary Bowen accompanied
her there.
Mrs. J. P. Abbott returned from
Suplee where she. has been staying
with Mrs. Washburn since Mr.
Washburn's death. Mrs. Wash
burn has been sick with pneumonia
but was able to sit up when Mrs
Abbott left. One of Mrs. Wash
bum's little girls came home with
her.
U. S. Endersby was visiting at
Cap Endersby's at Eight Mile last
week. Bill and Alice Endersby
of that place came home with him
and will remain untill after Thanks
giving.
Mr, and Mrs. D. Woodside and
Mrs Barzee returned home from
Portland Saturday.
Mrs. N. G. Iledin, and little
daughter Nova, left here for Port
land to day to spend Thanksgiving
with her parents, and Boldier Bro
Harold Rutherford, who visited
here last winter, and will be home
on a furlough before going east
Mr. aud Mrs. Sid Wilson arrived
1 home Sunday morning. Mr. Wil
' son has been at Camp Lewis since
September 5th. Mrs. Wilson has
been visiting relatives in Tacoma
and Seattle the past few weeks.
Mr. Wilson says he likes the
Army life fine and that they
are all a Gne bunch of fellows.
A reception was given him in
Eviok's hall Monday night. A
short programme was rendered,
and the Maupin, and Wapinitia
' Bands furnished the music. E.
M. Hartman gave an address and
an urgeut plea for the Y. M. C.
A. was made. Mr. Wilson gave
ns a fine talk on Army life, and

Mr. Lake, who was in the front
seat beside the wheel, and having

which injuries he died Saturday
night it 9 o'clock.
They went to their rooms and
although Mr. Lake complained of
his head hurting him, the injuries
were not thought so serious until
Dr. Elwood was called and fond
a broken jaw bone, and the skull
fractured. He became unconscious
about 8 o'clock from which he
never rallied, and L. D. Kelly
took him soon after noon to The
Dalles hospital where an operation
was performed to no avail.
Mr. Lake was a young man of
pleasing appearance and has made
many friends during his residence
of something over a year in
Maupin, as well as having built
up a thriving little merchandise
business of Lake's Cabh Store a"t
the end of the bridge. He is a
native ot Wasco county, having
spent most of his life In The
Dalles, being the eon of A. E.
Lake of Wamic, a former county
i judge.
Funeral services were held at
the Crandall chapel in The Dalles
at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning
and interment made in the Odd
Fellows' cemetery.

of Hermieton, Oregon, and presi
dent of the Irrigation Congress of

A programme of local talent,
quartet, duet, and instrumental,
reading, etc, will 111 1 the evening.
A supper given by the Ladies will

This is an open meeting and all
