Rev. G. E. McDonald delivered
the sermon at Pine Grove as sched
uled. A packed school house
awaited him as usual eleven auto
mobiles lined up in front,
"Testament day" was observed
Sunday morning. Funds were
raised to provide Oregon boys in
the army and navy with 50 testa
ments. The S. S. has also sent,
away funds for Bibles for use in
Sunday School.
The Wapinitia Commercial
Club met on the 6th at 8 p. m. in
Eyick'a hall for the purpose of re
organizatoin. The meeting was
fairly well attended. Officers elec
ted as follows: Pres. Geo, Wood,
vice Pres. Jack Kelly, Sec, N. G.
Hedin, Treas. P. M, Bevier. Com
mittee on perraaut organization
appointed by president as follows:

Woodside. Meeting callad for two
weeks, The gathering was ad
dressed by G. E. McDonald on
the topic of Value of Organization
The thrilling address was enjoed
by the meeting. All the old or
ganizations of Wapinitia Plains
were represented and a live club

from his trip to Maupin where he
was under Dr. El wood's care.'
J. P. Abbott is again able to be
about after three week's illness.
Mr. James Gray and family
have left the employ of J. Ward.

Wayne Spoor has in the past
few cfyys killed two coyotes, two
hawks, one owl and a skunk.
Cora Smith is home after assist
ing Mrs. Bessie Gesh a few days.
Mrs. A. A. Popham is quite ill.

move to The Dalles this week,
Edward Disbiow purchased a
phone from Floyd Kelly of which
he is manufacturer. B. W, Mor

Konrad Hauser of Tygh Valley
who was in The Dalles today re
ports the loss of a large barn on
his ranch Sunday, fire destroying
the entire building and contents.
Sixty tons of hay, several wagons
and some harness were burned.
About half of Mr. Hauser's loss
was covered by insurance. Chron

vicinity:
Today is "Newspaper
d iy" in Ft. Stevens. Every sol
dier inHhe Fort was asked to send
a letter to the people in his homo
town through the newspaper. The
Newspaper day was introduced
through the Y. M. C. A. which. is
doing great work in promoting the
gymnastics among the boys.
The army is fine especially the
Coast Artillery branch. We haye
plenty to eat and wear, good wages
and intensive training which will
help to make the Kaiser Bill crawl

able to do anything like that by
the time Uncle Sammio's hoys get
through with him. I know if all
the boys in the service are as anx
ious to get at him as the boys of
Ft. Stevens ore he wont last long
after the first real battle has begun
I'm not going to try to tell you
what we do here a3 it would be
quite a job, Of course the army
life has its few draw backs the
same as any place a follow can go,
In the Hue of pleasures we have a
pool table, a phonograph, news
papers, magazines and a library.
Then we have movies nearly every
night and several other things to
pass away the time. Anybody
that doesn't like the pastimes of
the free to go any place they went
to from 5 p. m. until until 5:45 a.
m. We have Saturday afterticon
and Suuday off.
We hear many people talk about
the beds we have to sleep in.
Many seem to think we have
bunks like they have in the log
ging camps, but this picture ex
plains it better than I can. TIih
equipment ou it is spread out for
our regular Saturday inspection.

F. M. Confer of this city eus
tained a bad scalp wound Satur
day evening when he was struck
by the Walther-Williams auto de
livery truck, being knocked to the
pavement. Mr. Confer was stand
ing in the street in frout of the H.
R. Fanchor garagn and stepped
backward, directly in front of the
approaching auto, which he did
not notice. The impact caused
the man to turu a complete eum
ersault iu the air. It in consider
