Commercial Club of Wapinitia
Plains to reorganize Saturday,
October Gth, at 8 p. m. at Evick's
hall. All the old members of the
club as well as all applicants to
this new vigorous club are notified
to be present, ' A special invita
tion is extended to members of the
Cattle Growers' Ass'n., the Fores
try Service, Farmers' Union, pros
pective water users of Wapinitia
Plains. An interesting program
will bo given. Piemember it's
Saturday night of the 6th.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Graham and
Mrs. D. Wright came out to Wapi
nitia Monday for a flying trip,
Roads reported rough. Fire dan
ger about over in mountains, Mr.
Graham says.
J. L. Hartman reported he was
forced to decline an attractive
lumber contract recently due to
the scarcity of labor, Why does
the labor force of 'Wapinitia Plains
be drawn into the army and navy
and no credit be given for. a large
part of the recruits. Does Port
land pet credit for outside men
because tbey take final examina
tion tlieie? Is Portland exempt
or that reason today while we
still are called upon for men?
What about the road work this
fall? Whose - to 'do the work,

Extension work began Monday
morning on Wapinitia Irrigation
Co.'s canal. The dirt is very dry,
but progress is good. Any of the
adjoining land owners or farmers
who are interested in working out
some interest or buying water
should see N. G. Hedin while the
work is going on near their neigh
borhood. , Engineer H.N. Dodge
bas computed the capacity of the
first reservoir in McCubbin's Gulch
and s.t the survey stakes for the
flood line of said dam. Some 209
000,000 gallons may' be empound
ed with a 35 foot dam.
Several bears have been seen
skating the Flat for acorns.. Six
were treed in one day - on the
Hunter place. .
Mr. Mower, the new Pine Grove
teacher is a band instructor, so it
has been reported. Get together
;aml polish up the brass so that we
may have some music this winter.

The Driver sale was attended by
several Pine Grove folks. Good
sale and good time reported. The
Ditch Co. bought Mr. Driver's in
terest in the lelephose line with

Welby A. Dane who ia ill at
Maupin is missed by all his friends
and a speedy recovery is hoped for
Mr. and Mr?. Dee Woodeide re
turned home after spending a few
days over the mountains up and ;
down the Willamette Valley.

Fire Started

shortly after midnight Tuesday

full of smoke and awaken the
sleepers,
The fire started from a defect in
the asbestos padding of the ex
haust pipe of the Delco lighting
system which is located in the
wall between the bathroom and
that occupied by Mr, ani Mrs.
Kelly. The wall was burned
through and a bureau aeainst it
damaged. The damage by the
fire itself and cutting out a portion
of the wall is estimated at about
$100.

The dance at Shattuck's hall
Saturday evening was a perfect
success in every way. The new .
hardwood floor was wonderful and
cannot be surpassed. The decora
tions were very nifty, arranged by
Bates Shattuck to fit the occasion.
Excellent music by the Vander
pool orchestra. A large crowd en
joyed lhcm:clve to the fullest
extent, only strangers had a hard
