Very early in life his family re moved to Illinois which he always claimed as his native state. In 1850, at the heighth of the gold excitement, he came to Cali fornia, spending some time in that state and in Mexico. Returning to Illinois he was married to Miss Mary Smith and early in 1852 they . joined a company of emi grants and began the long march across the plains to Oregon, the new land of promise. The newly married pair, settled Linn county, where most of their large family of eleyen chil dren .were "born, then came to Wasco county and settled on a farm pear Dufur, where Mrs Mc Corkle died. Mr. McCorkle later married Mrs. Abbie Zumwalt, who sorrows him as do also two chil dren of this later union. He was the father of thliteen children eight of whom are still living, six boys, all of whom live near Tygh Valley, and Mrs. M. A. Flinn of Portland, and Mrs. Zena Alsea of Oakland, Cal. One by one the pioneers are be ing gathered to their fathers, leav iug the scenes of long years of labor and toil to a younger genera tion. Do they meet the exigencies of life with the same high fortitude and courage and the same dispo sition to conquor as our Sturdy fathers showed in planting a great common wealth in the heart of a wilderness such as even sixty years ago Oregon still was. Be it ours to carry on to glorious completion the work they so nobly begun.
