Do You See the Point?
The following is the impression
made on the brain of an outside
person through scanlng the pages
of this paper,
Maupin is the title given a little
nitche lying near the Deschute
river iu Southern Wasco county
presumably the name of some early
settler in thai section.
The Tum-A.Lum Compauy, a
well organised corporation of lum
ber merchants in the northwest
have installed a stock of building
materials and are represented by a
live agent who hopes to see a town
grow out of the well located place
for one.
Shatttick Bros., a firm of live
merchants of considerable experi
ence, have grawped the spirit too,
that Maupin has a future and have
stocked up with a remarkably full
line of general merchandise which
undoubtedly finds a heavy patron
age among the many farmers and
ranchmen of the adjacent 25 miles
.surrounding territory.
K. J. Fischer, an enterprising
automobile man conducts a garage
and repair shops, with auto livery
in connection, also Ford agency. 1
For the convenience of the above
mentioned and the prosperous
farming community surrounding,
a state bank has' been established
which is also the county depository
of this section,
A well got up church notice
shows the place can boast of an
energetic man of God.
Mr. Emmons will fix your watch.
Icecream may be had during the
warm dys ar Talcott's and Harph
an's, each of these gentlemen hay
ing a general line of confectionery,
From the reading of this sheet,
we suppose that it Is backed mainly1
by a few struggling homesteaders
and the subscriptions of the farm
ing community, which compared
with the record on the Printers'
Union books for six months show
ing failure to make good and reason
of three men who have had charge
of this paper, leads us to wonder at
the sanity of a fourth individual
unless it be a case of more wealth
than brains, in the first place, to
think of continuing a newt-sheet,
where neither railway locomotive
whistle break the monotony, nor
any of the other necessities of au
organised village are represented
Maupin needs a barbershop, baths,
warehouse, railroad, blacksmith
shop, livery barn, hotel, telephone
system, community hall, grist mill,
meat market and another store or
so. And the surrounding stage
stations would do well to install
general merchandise lines, repair
shops, etc., and partly get rid of
giving the outside impression that
this is a mail order county.
Maupin is in prions need of a
whirl wind, uot yf the ordinary
tyge that comes gently once in a
while mid stirs the general germs
iu the atmosphere, a fi-w news.
pap.-rs, light chips and possibly a
tin can or two in some of the back
yards and alleys, but one that will
move the rubbish that seems to
lodge in those places, which might
be burned if raked up and lighted,
or boxed up and hauled away if
we were but enterprising enough to
do it. Other towns of this size
and smaller have clean-up days
and alt residents of such place ob
serve same iu u appropriate man

what is the use of the housekeeper
setting poison and tanglefoot and
wearing out dozens of By swatters,
to say nothing of the amount of
nerve energy to have a new supply
