Staines, our eleventh grade teacher went , tq The Dalles last Monday to attend the teachers' institute which js bejng hdd there H 2U TO HOLD The Portland, Chamber of Com merce, announces the second an nual Maunfaqturers' & Land Products Show, to be held in the Armory and special exhibition buildjngs frp,m October 25th to November 12th.. All counties and commuuities will be give a reaspnable amount of space free for exhibit purposes. LQw railroad fares for the round trip will give many an op portunity to visit Portland and view the great arrry of exhibits from the factories, the forest anu the field. This year there is to be a grand, prize for the best county exhibit, the best individ ual farm exhibit and for apple and potato displays. The com plete premium ljst will be an nounced later. Preparations are being made for many special events and cites and towns of the North west wjll have days set aside for them at the show when excur sions will be run to Portland. Will Shields and Mack Holla man went to Hartraan's mill Wed nesday to begin logging. Criterion Chronicles The prevailing cold weather of the past few days has caused no little discomfort to our citizeoi. Dale Bonney and wife returned home Monday after a few days' visit with relatives at Tygh. Joe Gray has a brother with him from Friend. A brother and sis ter of Mrs. Gray were here a few days recentlyi . Roy Castor and family are again domiciled on their Criterion ranch. School is closed this week on ac count of Miss Herrling's attend- ance at Institute. The friends of Peter Kirch learn with regret of his contracting ty phoid and hope for his speedy re covery, Ed Herding has been in miseraj ble healih for the past week. Mrs and A. A. Canfield attend ed church at Maupin Sunday night, J. B. Kidder has filed on an ad' ditioual quarter section adjoining him. The Wilson Bros, new thresliin outfit is giving good satisfaction, Social Events A farewell reception was ten dered Mrs. Grant Snyder, Mrs D. ,M. Shattuck's sister who has been her gqest trip last few weeks. Tuesday afternoon before her departure for' the metropolis Wednesday morning. Cake and ice cream were served to Mrs. Snyder, Mrs- D. M. Shattuck, Mrs. Piercy, Mrs. Mayhew, Mrs. Ray, Mrs. Smith, Mas. Kelly, Mrs. Harphan, Mrs. WilhelnW Mrs. Goetjen, Mrs, Stuart. While the ladies were thus en gaged some of the young people gathered at the Goetjen home and enjoyed afternoon refresh ments of cake, pie and soda wat er. The Mesdanies Lola Thornton, Gertrude Noble and Vera Bussell made a trip to Wamic this week, Lola having two teeth traded while there. Albert Russell and wife made a trip to Maupin this week with their baby who seemed to be quite sick. They took him to Dr. Francis. Willie Stakely's baby is some better at this writing. C. H. Yockey's had a doctor with their baby thin week. V.eruie Thornton , got badly hurt at school this week 'while playing ball. He and Leonard Farlow ran together striking Verdie's tem ple. He lay unconscious for about hours and still suffers wjth violent headaches, Mrs. Nettie McMillian is visiting with her son A. F. Russell. They are enroute home from the Pendle ton Round-up. Mrs. William Connolly of Mau piti visited in this city Monday. Claude Wilson of Bakeoven is a business iu The Dalles. , W. E. Hunt of Maupin was in The Dalles on business Saturday. Mrs, T. A Connolly and Mrs. Twohy of Maupin are Wasco coun ty fair visitors in this cty this Mr. and Mrs, Wess Ray who recently came from the the Thos, W.' Lawson ranch near I'lineville will son trke residence in the little cottage vacated by Mrs. Oliver. The building has' been moved back off the street. ; France Confer and wife went to Portland Sunday over the Colum bia highway. MAUPIN PEOPLf Mr. Kobertson. the 0. R. & N. telephone inspector, was here Tuesday making examinstion of telephone and interviewing Mau pin business people'. Th sub; ject of a local telephone system for Maupin seems to be heartily endorsed by our citizens. The' Pacific States telephone Co. of fers a commission of 15 per cent to the local operator on long dis tance calls and the railway com panies $1 a month each. The Rangers Telephone Co. offer t,o put a line through as soon as a switch boad is put jn here. The proposed telephone system will not necessarily interfere with the oije already in use but be an independent line and pay switchage when going through Tygh central, which wilj with the rangers connection make three djreet routes to get long distance service to Portland.
