We solicit your hearty co operation with our endeavors to rightly represent the promising city of Maupin and Southern Waseo county. Smock News Mr. Grant is talking of leaving the country. The road grader has been doing some nice work on the Smock roads. A. B; Thornton is employed 011 the F. E. Spoor farm. ' We have witncased a little rain and wind on the prarie this week. Mrs. Jula Driver is soon to re turn to her homestead. Planting corn seems to be the work on Smock now. M. P. and G. W, Thornton made a hurry-up trip to Maupin Satur day. Among those in attendance at Sunday School were F. E. Spoor and Mrs. Pierce. John Farlow and family made a trip to The Dalles this week. Geo. Bedford who is employed in the forestry service left for the mountains Tuesday morning. He expects to be gone all summer. We lead Others follow. Lis ten! The money order receipts for April of this year at the Maupin postoffice amounted to $1311.92, a gain of $414.50 over April of last year. Postmaster W. II. Tallcott stated that this month, May, is starting off with a big lead over any previous month. J. G. Dollarhide who is contract or on the big cut at th head of the new irrigation canal passed through here Wednesday on his way to Portland, where he will purchase a large steel cable. Kelly wit! this families were in attendance at the Celito celebration this week. A. Locke; the O. T. agent at this place has taken a layoff for two weeks while he and his family are arranging for farm life on their homestead. A. L. Barnes, who has so ably steered the Times the past several weeks is in The Dalles on import ant business connected with this paper, at the time of going to press. Mr. Hank Hnrphan received a letter yesterday stating that his wife is improving very rapidly and went through the operation at Tlie Dalles Hospital very nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Gill. Mrs. Grover Slusher and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Vanderpool of Dufur, spent Sunday afternoon in this city visit ing relatives and friends. E. J. Styer will treat the public to ice cream Sunday. Tallcott has prepared to keep ice cream from now ou during the summer and will receive a nict lot of the Hazelvvood cream from Portland for the Saturday and Sun day trade. School Notes Mrs. A. Locke was a visitor in the primary room Tuesday after noon, A list of supplementary readers liave been received from the coun ty library and are hcing gtx.iil enjoyed by the members of tin 2nd and 4U1 grades. Helen Locke visited the school Wednesday. Lena St. Dennis has been out of school this week because of an ac cident, caused by falling from her horse on her way to school one morning last week, Lester Crofoot went to The Dalles to attend the celebration of the opening of the Celilo canal. The sixth and eight grade geog raphy classes have been making some excellent maps of Va--ci) county showing sectiotii township, range, the railroads, principal streams and every postoffice. The great question is at last set tled. Capitol punishment should be abolished, It was so decided bv the Literaty society last Friday, both on the merits of the debate and the merits of the question.
