Mid C. K. Salisbury, director of service of the Hupp Slotor Cr corporation. "In a surprisingly large number kif cases no haVo received practic ally the same response to Inquiries we sent to Hupmobile century own ers as to their experiences. From city to city e heard that officials (n chars refused to test any more f our cars after seeing one or two tried out. In the comparatively rew cares inhere a tost was made e were ad vised that invariably century siics .it-ht. were brought to a Quick and smooth stop far short of tho prescribed marks and repeatedly they scored tho best marks ever p-ecorded in their communities. Testing Officials Balk 'The result of these Impressive tests seems to have been a quite general refusal on the part of test ing officials to waste time on Hup mobile cars. An experience scecis to have been-common which Is re ported by a century six owner In lone large city. . . , " -What are you trying to doT Xld somebody ?' the testing official enapped out at tiim. "Get away from here. You know your brakes are all right. Give me a chance to test brakes that need testing, can t aouf " ' , , j The exceptionally quick and smooth deceleration features ot Hupmobile cars. Mr. Salisbury ex plained, are due to the Uupmoblle atldland (steeldraulic) four wheel brakes with which all century sixes and eights are equipped. Longer Tire Life Results The steeldraulic brakes allow IJO to 15 per cent more effective power than other four wheel sys tems due to elimination of Brake friction and faster brake release, aald Mr. Salisbury. -"As a result they give freedom from 'freezing' of brakes, longer tire life and more economy In gasoline consumption. , "Elimination of brake drag is made possible by a clearance of alxty-two thousandths of an Inch tiaiitwn the drums and the linings. inunst only ten-thousandths or even less. In other four wheel sys tems. "The system Is remarkably posi tive and simple. Toggles, clevises. pins and other complicated parts detrimental to mechanical systems Jiavo been almost completely elimi nated. Operation is through flex- Ible steel cables, enclosed in speci ally designed conduits, t No Alignment Needed "Brake control under all road "conditions, even from violent axle movements and spring deflections, is accompanied by highly unusual degree of freedom from need for attention and adjustment. Test cars that were under examination while the century model was being developed have records of con tinuous operation of more than 18 months without a brake adjust ment of any kind. "The steeldraulic system Is of the Internal expanding type, with the entire mechanism sealed against exposure to dirt or water. Each brake has a single piece shoe, half of It flanged. The shoe requires but little pedal pressure to make it operate against the drum, due to utilization of the self-ener-gixing principle. Grabbing is pre vented, as the flanged section eliminates a full wrapping effect 5 $ y t, su - 8n .-. Vi - batata " .MgaatW.AWssir. i-wm- . i 1 1 i . ... .i. FOUR SPEEDS ADVANTAGE BEYEFTTS ARE EXPLAINED BY CHAS. TAYLOR, DEALEK Says New Drive Assures Quiet Op eration, Longer Life and Im proved Cnr Performance "How can a four-speed trans mission accomplish all the vari ous Improvements In motoring that "are claimed for H?" Charles Taylor, representing Graham-Paige here, i os th-t this Is the question he is most fre quently asked about the new line of automoDlles, and sums up its answer as follows: "Tho four-speed transmission, as modernized by the use of In ternal gearing for third speed. : the one device that no' only gives the advantages of a fast rear axle hut. In addition, actually improves the pick-up and hlll-clliiibing ability. "The third speed, because of he stience and effKency of the Internal gearing, Is virtually an alternative direct tiri e, yet gives the Increased pulling power of a lower gear. Transmission Problem Sotted "The old-fashioned four-speed transmission war not acciptakle to tho American motorist because of the noise and low efficiency of its spur gears. The use of Internal gears eliminates thene draw-backs and brings to motoring an entirely now satisfaction In performance. In fact, the transmission problem han been solved what was Ic. merly regarded by many motorlsls as the ono remaining draw-bock to plea suraMo motoring has become In stead a positive advantage." Longer life The gears ;.re In constant mesh, hence are not ub Ject to destructive clashing, chip ping and stripping. Increased efflcinccy This form of gearing has very low fractional losses, delivering 9S per cent of the power received. Improved car performance Better acceleration and hill-climbing powers result naturally because more power la delivered to the rear wheels. Ease of control Changes of speed from fourth to third or from third to fourth can be made with facility under any driving condi tions nqrmally calling for a change of gears. Advantages In Direct Drive But greater adt antages of the new drive are evident in fourth speed, which ' direct drive. Because of the higher geared rear axe, the ennc'r.e and the drive shaft In. the four-siieer) car re volve IS. per cent slower than in the average three-speed car. En gine vibration, noUes, and roar are reduced. Cooling is belter .and gasollno and oil consumption low er, because the engine makes few er strokes per mile and operates within its most efficient range. HSIIE SETS HIIK Jl'LY AXOTITER RECORD FOR SALES AND OLTFCT More than 00.000 Old.-nioblles .ship. ped Between January 1 and July 31, This Year With another month of record breaking business during July. Oldsmobilc has In the seven months of 1528 exceeded all previ ous full year records. More than 60.000 Oldsmoblles have been ship ped bewten January 1 and July 31 this year. Thla exceeds the num ber of Oldsmoblles shipped during the best previous 12 months, fac tory officials report. Oldsmobile production and ship ments during the paat five months of March, April, May, June and July this year have averaged 10.- 652 cars a month. The banner month was May when 11.716 Olds mobiles left the factory. Shipments were low in January and Febru ary this year incident to produc ing an entirely new car. During these months of record production, shipments and sales. the stock in the hands' of tho deal ers has remained, and is, below normal. In other words produc tion has barely kept pace ' with sales, leaving no margin with which fo build up reserve stocks. Retail sales show the same great gains as do production and shipments. High Tlace Is Won ' The record made by Oldsmo bile since January 1 this year speaks eloquently of the high place the new Oldsmobile has won in the confidence of the public," said D. S. Eddlns, vice president and general sales manager, when an nouncing the figures. Oldsmobile has made these phenominal gains without Increas ing its line ot cars and In faco of three years of exceptionally good business. The company had been exceeding previous records during 13:5, jj26 and 1S!7 when, in January of this year, It announced its new and present lino of Oldsmoblles. "The new Oldsmobile Is tho pro duct of two years continuous work of designing and testing and has been proclaimed by automobile ex perts as reflecting the motor car trend for the next two years.
