EWCUNE& are bound to wear when they do not get - Iho proper lubrication, i-'urthennore, they are under Iho cltuheb, where they ore subject to tbo splash of mud. They becomo filled with sand and water so that thoro Is no rcaaon to wonder that after a while they come noisy In spite of tension springs' and other devices. Constant engine vlhrntlon is responslhto for a grent part of tho nolso that develops in other pans of the chassis. This is something that Is almost! beyond control of the owner. lie can keep the bolts in tho puns and other sheet metal parts tight, and he can also keep all the accessor'es,"' such as the lamps, horns, etc., firmly (aatened In place to that they do not pick up the vibration of the engine, but it Is up to the designer primarily to see that the engine Is in balance and so designed that the vibrations will bo at a minimum. Big strides are being made in engine deslgln as far ts the elimi nation of vibration is concerned. Probably thevbest accomplishment as fnr as the ordinary user is con cerned Is tho ability to utilize in cheaper cars devices that former ly were characteristic of the very high priced vehicle only. Take, for Instance, the vibration damper. A few years ago it was to bo found only on a few of the high-priced Kuropea cars, but today we see it used on many 'ol the moderate- priced sizes made In thla country, Thla device la very effective for checking the annoying and damag ing effects of torsional vibration Another improvement that has cut down vibration and Increased engine life Is in the Increased number of bearings on the crank shaft as well as the heavier shaft Itself, Tear by year crankshafts hav been growing In diameter, and the number of bearings have bee.. Increased, with the result that a much more sturdy, rigid power plant is provldod. The duys of three-point, flexible englno sus pension have Juat about parsed away , and In Its pi.ee a rigid con nection between tie engine a .d the frame is employed, with the ex ception that cushioning blocks cf rubber aro quite common on cer tain four-cyllndct types. We'are traveling at much high er average speeds these days than we traveled a low years ago. Not only can the cara go faster with safety, but the roads also are so much belter that they can utilize the speed with , which they have been provided. This Is resulting in the necessity for more sturdy body construction as well aa more rigid chassis. Kven If the cara were not lasting longer from the standpoint of the period of years that they are in service, they are covering more ground during that time. Thla Is due to the better roads as well a the better performance characteristic ot the car. Blgter and more generous Hhackle bearings, with adjustment for wear, have been responsible for a great reduction in the amount of shackle rattle. This used to be one of the most characteristic sounds of a car that was over a car old. Today cara are capable of going through their entlro life with quiet shackles If the lubrica tion Is taken care ot and adjust ment ar made to take up wear from Urn to time. Most of the chassis noise originates today In loose brake linkage. This can be held In check to a certain extent by the use ot tension spring to hold th offending member tight- )7 In place. , Occasional oiling Is also a material help.
