Oregon for taxes lost In the trans
fer of the timber lands In the Ore
gon and California railway grant
to the government in 1916.
, The measure would authorize
; payment of sums from the federal
! treasury equivalent to those levied
I by the counties on the land while
1 it was under private ownership, the
government to be compensated
from funds received by sale .of

tracts. This fund now amounts to
$3,563,274 but the federal govern
ment and the Oregon and Califor
nia railroad company hold liens
against It amounting to $1,671,044
and $9,250,000, respectively, a to
tal of $7,821,044. . v

court. There are arguments la
favor of both. It was stated. The
old bridge, which Is of the covered
design, has stood up well for many
yoara, although it Is now said to
be in rather a weakened condition.
A great deal of heavy traftlc has
passed over It since It was built.
Over this bridge pase all the traf
fic of tho thickly settled Mohawk
valley and Camp creek valley and
that of tho McKensie valley north
of the river between tho llayden
bddgo and the Hendricks bridge.
