CITING AND RECEIVING
The Christmas spirit Is best sum
med un In this brief sentence: "It
is more blessed to give than to re
ceive." That is true; every word
of it all the cynics in the world to
the contrary notwithstanding. , Tha
thrill of giving is a finer thing by
far than the thrill of receiving.
The other day R. A. Booth gave
en address to Boy Scouts and their
representatives. The kernel of his
sddisfcs was the assertion " that
what a man achieves In this world
- is measured ia th last analysis by
what he ia able to give to the
world. No truer words were ever
spoken. Lincoln isn't great be
cause he was chosen president of
the United States at a; critical
period in the country's history. Be
Is great because of what he gave to
the nation In Its hour of need.
Henry Ford , Is , probably the
richest man in the world. But he
Isn't great on that account.- Yet,
undeniably, he la a great man. Ho
Is' great because he took a little,
seemingly Insignificant Idea and
developed it into a great boon ta
mankind. Be gave to us the power
to get cheaply and swiftly i from
place' to place he realized the
- vision of the ancient dreamer who
conceived- the myth of the magic
blanket. And, -while ' conferring
that boon upon mankind, he found
ed a great industry, that enables
thousands to earn more and have
more.'. .That la why he Is great. I'
- is why all men who rise above the
ruck are great. It is, because ' of
what they give to others not be
cause of the trifling and tempo
rary things that they receive tor
themselves. . . .' .
. ' There are those whfi say ' that
Christmas, save as It applies to the
children, is a failure that the
burden of giving is not worth the
effort involved In bearing it Per
haps we all-rail of us, that Is, who
are of maturer years have said
that very thing in our more cynical
moments. - But It Is not true.
Christmas ia not a failure. The
spirit of Christmas Is a holy thing,
a living thing, a constructive thing
that touches the lives of all of us
and leaves us better for its touch.
Man's days ara brief. Be comes
Into the world and plays his little
' sketch upon Us stage, and in a few
moments for the span of a human
life la but a moment when com
pared with' eternity the curtain
falls- and his hour Is done. When
the time comes for the curtain to
fall U is not what he has receive!
that counts in the record, but what
he has given, it Is truly more
blessed to give than to receive, and
he who denies it Is blinder than a
bat.
MORNING REGISTER, EUGENE, gRE.j FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25,
it. He kopt order tbo well en
forced the laws so rigidly tliiU
businoss was hurt. That is why the
big cltlos are as wicked as they are
which la not quite aa wicked as
they are painted. They don't want
the laws enforced too rigidly, be
cause it hurls business.
Then there Is another angle, thai
might as well bo considered while
we are in the considering business
cities everywhere, big and llttto, put
a lot of law on thotr books that
are designed to look well and sound
well but not to bo enforced. Tho
curfew laws are an example. As a
people we are fond of passing high
sounding laws and then forirottltiif.
about them. That Is one of the rea
sons why law enforcement in this
country la as lax as it Is.

Bonor of Being First to Brag of
Oregon's Rain Contested
(Portland Oregonlan)
The Eugene Register vows It
was first openly to proclaim a
proper pride in Oregon preclplta.
tlon. There It stood, that fear
less paladin of a free press, bare
of head In a pelting Oregon mist,
calling out to all and sundry that
It liked the rain; that it had webs
between every toe, goose-feathers
sprouting from its front page, the
beak of a duck and the eye of an
osprey and that It rejoiced in
these regional peculiarities. Well,
let It pass. For oeventy-flve years
The Oregonlan has extolled the
Oregon rainfall, early and late,
and broken many a cudgel for the
faith. If the Register things It
was first -. ... m no matter. There is
glory enough for all, precisely as
there Is an abundance of rain to go
around.
Rain. The loam drinks It deep
ly, great swallows of the crystal
line bounty of heaven, and up
springs the grass, and down goes
the price of milk. Leastwise, It
ougnt to go aown f there Is aught
In cause and effect. More rain.
Through s green countryside the
crooks baste riotously to the
creeks, and the creeks rush Im
petuously to the rivers, and the
rivers go wallowing down to the
sea. Rain. We have so much of
It that we are disposed to contri
bute far more tnan our quota' to
the blue Paclfc. More rain. It
they say to you, "Yes, but It rnlns
In Oregon," then say to thorn, "I'll
say It does!" And say It with tho
prideful Inflection of a fond father
praising the brightness ot his fav
orite child. Thus you may con
trive to have them on the hip.
The Oregonlan is content to nerr
mlt, -without tbo least impatience,
any or-all of Its state contempor
aries to claim honor for originat
ing this Doia stand in favor of rain,
During the summer season, when
at times the rain comes not, and
the breast ot earth is sore, and
the lawn hose dovelops a leak, and
somebody has made away with the
noxzle, we are apt to grow peev
ish', petulant and pernicklty. We
ore prone to quarrel over trifles,
and to split an argument exactly
to ht mid-rib of a hair. But not
now. It rains. And tbon It rains
some more, we are at peace with
Dressing Quiekly
Ono Mother Says:
My boys were very slow about
dressing and undressing until wo
started the "bealini; game." At
night I put a record on the
Victrola and they try to gel ready
for bed before It stops. They call
It "Beating the Music." In the
morning I give them a tlmo limit
on the clock. They beat the clock
by getting dressed before tho
hands'reach the given place.
uf
sero weather Immediately follow,
ing another zero day, and I'll sltovv
you a marked tall In the health oi
the community." "Such wus the
verdict of my friend.
'What can wo do to prevent such
results?" I asked.
"Have ovorybody dress accord
ing to tho thermometer, guard
ugatust oxpogm-o Indoors and out
and never go to bed with cold
feet. That is tha remedy," ho re
plied. Ono reason I dread the coal
famine Is because tho houses go
cold. It Is just us easy to get a
terrible cold Indoors tts out In the
weather. To get chilled, whether
la your own parlor or on tho streot
ts not good for you and ono place
of exposure is Just as bad us tho
other.
Lots of persons, women particu
larly, have naturally cold feet
that is, they feel cold to the touch.
Hut I do not refer to coldness of
this degree When 1 speak of cold
feet I mean tho uncomfortabio or
painful chilliness which follows ox
posuro to continued low tempera
ture.
One of tha foolish Ideas ot too
many persons is to be uslmmed of
warm stockings or wurm shoes. It
is all right to wear sheer, silk ,
stockings if your duties do not
keen you out-of-dors, or In a cold
houso hours ut a time. You cun
not afford to huve habitually cold
feet and you cannot afford to sub
mit to tho dangers of cold . fci t
when you ure not used to tho cold.
You must use your hoad on a, I
such matters. Don't go to oxtromoj.
Guard against tho very rlnnuaroiu
extreme of extremely cold weathor.
.My friend's long experience hiul
taught him a thing which every
body should know.
Indoor workers who spend but a
little while each day In tho cold
out-of-doors should havo heavy
overcoats or wraps, utid other
means of protection against that
terrible chilling which cuts to the '
bone. It may seem unnecessary
to take precautions ugulnst a fen
minutes or an hour of cold air. On :
the contrary It Is very foolish not
to do It.
Please don't go to tho other ex
treme and get no fresh air at al,.
That Is even worso than tho chill
ing. You need tho oxygen Just as
much as in the summer more In
deed. Hut in getting fresh air.
