The First Christmas
Tree
It wns 1200 years apo, alop a snow covered hill In the wilds of
central Germany, that the Christmas tree was born. There, on
Christmas eve, had gathered a congregation of half-civilized
pngans to witness the slaying of a little child on the alter of the
Great God Thor. Under tho massive "Thundering Oak" the
aacred firo flickered, the stage was all set for the sacrifice.
As the priest's hammer was lifted 8t. Boniface, Bent to carry
Christianity to the "barbarians," rushed on the scene. He de
nounced the folly of such cruelty and cut down the sacred oak
before tho very eyes of the astonished mob.
"Look you to heaven "for your God," ho pleaded. "Take this
little Evergreen, which points to heaven, In the place of the low
hanging Oak at Thor.'
And from then to this day the Evergreen haa been tho symbol
of Christmas.
