AS TO SPEED LOUTS
The Washington legislature haa
roceived and is considering a bill to
raise the speed limit on the high
way from 30 mile an .hour to IS.
. The bill, incidentally, embodies the
excellent feature of the existing
Oregon law which establishes a
maximum limit In cities and towns
All those who travel beyond the
boundaries of Oregon will - hopa
that Washington, along with other
states, adopts this excellent plan.
Nothing can be more annoying to
tho tourist and In these days we
are all potential tourists than a
speed limit that varies in every
town entered.
As to the higher speed limit, it in
this writer's Judgment that Wash
ington should adopt it and hat
(Oregon at the rirtit-:tpportunity
lehould 'follow th lead 'of ' Wash
'ingtoh and California.' Thirty-five
miles an hour Is not an excessive
spied as modern roads and modern
machlnoa go. ' ' ,
There la much complaint of dis
regard ot traffic laws, and the com
plaint la justified. People are la.
mentably careless In this regard.
But a epoed limit ot SO mlloa an
hour la provocative of disregard of
law. Present day automobiles ara
built to travel much faster than
that, and common aonse tells the
driver that on an open road 80
miles an hour is no more dangerous
than 80. So he la tempted to break
the law, and when lie break it In
one way other .violations come
easier.

For n number of years the Hu
reau of IliiNltieas itosoareh of the
tlraduat Wchotil of Uualnou Ail
luliilairailon. Harvard Utiivorslty,
has conducted an Intensive survey
and study of the operating ex.
ponies and, prof Its of reinll-arocnry--stores
throughout the nation. The
reaults of this survey have been
compiled and anniysed by expert
statisticians and each year A litii-
leiln Is Issued containing the Infor
mation and ronrltialonn thus ob
tained. It Is Important to remem
ber that these surveys cover the
entlro country nnd every ort of
grocery store. They tm-ludo rash
stores as well as credit stores,
stores In small towns nnd large,
cities and slnres which rater to
either rush or credit trade doing
about an equal amount of both
kinds of bualneas. Therefore, In
making comparlaons, Hkugit stores
, nro compared to both cash and
credit stores throughout tho coun
try. The figures for 1JSS, compiled
by this bureau, showed 471 stores
reporting and that their average
grovs profit was 19.1 per cent ot
sales. They turned their stocks an
average of 10 limes a year. For
tho same period tho average gross
profit in Hkuggs stores was 18.09
a fraction over 18 per cent nnd the
stocks wore turned 16 tunes a year,
showing unsaying to tho publlo of
more than 81 per cent of gross
profits or ALMOST A THIRD.
For 19S4 with 645 stores of all
rlunn-K reporting the sales aver
aging ill per cent credit and 39 per
cent cash tho avorago gross profit
was shown as 19.8 per cent with nn
.avorago turnover of 10 times, the,
samo as the year befnro. For the '

traded elsewhere. Our 192G sales

As was pointed out nbovo the
greatest vnluti of statistics lies In
their ability to Inillcata a trond.
