and proposed publication of tho

in a desire to promote interest on
the part of I-'rench blind readers
in the works of Victor Hugo.
The following statement was
made by a representative of the
press:
"It should be Interesting to know
that Victor Hugo's literary exe
cutor. Oustave Simon, the scholar
and blblloohtlo. I. still busy and
that after years of research he has
discovered the manuscripts of '!
Miseres.' a novel written by Victor
Hugo more than ten years before
tbe appearance of "Lea Miserables.
or more than three-quarters of a
century ago.
"Except for the last two chap
ters, 'Ijoa Miseres was ready for
nubllcation when Victor Hugo was
sent into exile, which drove all
thoughts of finishing his novel
from his mind. The manuscript
was thrown aside and not evet
looked at for ten years. Hugo
then took up the manuscript, read
It was dissatisfied and derided to
rewrite the whole story. 'Lea Mis
erables was the result.
"Exile had caused changes in
Hugo's mind and it had its. effect
on his story, so that while 'I-ej
Miseres lias the basic theme of 'Lei
Miserables,' there are essential dif
ferences in the two works. The
earlier novel, It Is said, will read
like a new book. In 'Les Miseres'
there is none of wriat is usually
called the love Interest, and Cos
ette, one of the famous figures,
does not appear. In other words,
'Les Miserables was almost an en
tirely new story."
