TEIX OREGOVS STORY
The people of Bend are to under
take soon an enterprise that la of
more than ordinary Interest. They
plan to organize a central Oregon
historical, aoclety. whose purpose
will be to compile a history of that
great region.' . So far as possible at
this late date, data trill be compiled
from original sources.
' The history of Oregon Is perhaps
more romantically thrilling than
that of any other state, because U
traces back to that most astonish
ing of all the migrations in human
history the unprecedented jump
across two thousand miles of desert
to a fair land in the setting sun.
For uncounted generations people
have been migrating from one re
gion to another, but ordinarily the
process has been a gradual and
creeping one, extending the fron
tier a few steps at a time.' But the
ox team pioneers who founded Ore
gon were made of no such timid
stuff. They gathered their posses
sions together and, burning their
bridges behind them, they set
forth into the unknown with their
eyes upon a goal that was distant
more than halfway across the con-
For Its own sake the story of
that splendid hegira ought to be
collected and verified and set down.
Never again' in the history of the
world can it be repeated, for the
open spaces have been conquered
or surveyed and the wilderness as
' the Oregon pioneers knew it Is no
more. So far as our own great na
tion Is concerned, it has reached the
point of stabilization and there can
be no more extension of the fron
tier. In justice to future genera
' tions, the story of the crossing o'.
the plains should be preserved.
But -there is another and more
Immediate and more commercial
reason why the history of every re
- gion of Oregon ought to be com
': piled and made easily accessible
; We are expecting great things of
i the tourist, but we must remem
. ber that we can not always - con
' tlue to Interest him by showing him
: bare scenery alone. If we are to
hold his attention indefinitely we
must clothe the skeleton of mere
; scenery with the flesh and blood of
: tradition. That sounds like a badl
' mixed metaphor, but it contain
the germ of an Important idea.
Europe, which depends heavily
' upon the tourist, learned long ago
' not to place lta tole reliance upon
scenery. Every loveijr spot over
there has Its background of history.
and the result is enormous en
hancement of tho natural " charm.
- We of Oregon are new, and our
' past is as yet so near as not to be
romantic in our own eyes. But our
! judgment is warped by pror.lmlty,
No region of tho world has a more
romantic story than ouis. We can
profit in a variety of ways prac
tical as well as spiritual by col
lecting it and telling it to the world.
by borrowing It from a circulating
library or from a friend's library
table and then buys It for himself
to re-read as often as he wishes.
There are more new books com
ing out all the time nowadays than
ft single reader can keep up with.
And, as Wlnaton Churchill sayn,
many of them rost too much. The
fact that an August success la un
known In December certainly seem.i
to Indicate that It was of ephemeral
Interest. And It the revlowers who
first sang Us praises cannot recall
It at all. was It worth the readlnr
or the publishing, or the writing?
The people of Eugene have
cheerfully voted to refund the out
standing warrant debt, adding their
approval to two measures designed
to prevent similar accumulations.
All they ask in return la that the
city's finances be so managed In
the future as to avoid exceeding
the budget and thus endangering
the city's credit.

SHORT-LIVED BOOKS
A writer about books and literary

Hut whether we want the baby
to grow or not. he Just will. It
Isn't long before he stands on hlo

and then Is on tho run about the
house and yard.
A very tiny baby Is ubsoluetly
helpless. For the first few days
after birth It has very slight con
trol of Its body, voluntary move
ment In Imnossible.
I am always Impressed by the
marvel of the baby call s ability to
walk. It will etruKKle to Its feet
Immediately after birth and. pretty
staggeringly, it must be admitted,
will make its way across the field.
But the human baby, with an In
telligent mother to look after its
wants, has no need to be able to
walk for months after Its birth.
Its little muscles, the features of
the fare and even the control of Its
head are beyond self-management
The baby stays where It Is put and
la hardly conscious of the world
and Its inhabitants.
What a wonderful change tnkoJ
place during the two or three
months after birth! In a half
year It Is playing with toys and is
making an effort to stand on the
feet. It Is creeping at seven Or eight
months and before the first birth
day arrives the little chap can walk
alone.
Don't get discouraged If the baby
does not walk or talk at an early
age. some children seem to M Hi
no hurry about getting about or ex
pressing an opinion. They wilt
make up for these matters later!
We -want the baby to grow In
height and weight. The scales give
a very good idea of this physical
progress. They are the nest teat
of whether or not the feeding ar
rangements are perfect. -
There Is uniformity In the growth
of the child. During the first two
months he -will take on a pound In
weight and two Inches In height.
By the end of five months he
doubles his original weight and has
grown four inches or more in
length. .
At the end of the year the baby
ban trebled hfs weight at birth and
has added eight inches to his height.
It takes four years to double the
original height and In that time he
will add about thirty pounds to
his weight.
I am talking about the average
baby. There are many variations,
but in the main these are the
changes which are likely to take
place in a healthy baby.
